Join Be Social Change for our Makers Institute class on Disaster Response 101 & How You Can Get Involved with instructor Dave Seliger, former Fellow at the NYC Office of Emergency Management. In this class you will learn about the history of disasters and disaster response, recent innovations in preparedness and response, and how you can play a part in the future of protecting against disaster.

This event is meant for those of you wanting to prepare yourselves for any future natural disaster that may occur near you and be able to put yourself into action in case such an emergency would arise.

Everyday disasters are wreaking havoc around the globe. New York City has seen its fair share of disasters, most recently with Hurricane Sandy. Although there is already a complex system of highly trained local, state, federal, and nonprofit disaster responders, the innovative use of technology is rapidly changing how we deal with catastrophes both known and unknown. This class will provide a broad overview of disaster response, innovation in the field, and areas for future innovation.

  • The history of disaster response
  • NYC's disaster response system
  • The important role of disaster logistics
  • Innovations in disaster response
  • How you can get involved in the future disasters
