What we’re about
Bringing together people of all ages and abilities to share the ancient bio-technology that is qigong and tai chi. Tai Chi and Qigong are centuries old meaning they are not fads. They are here to stay because they really work and do bring balance to the body, mind and spirit when we practice on a regular basis.
The purpose of this group is to share some of the knowledge and practices of chi arts I’ve acquired over that past few decades of study and training. While I hold the title of ShiFu (expert) of Nei Gong Qigong, and am board certified to teach many forms of tai chi as well as qigong, it would take lifetimes to explore the full depth of these powerful practices. That’s part of what keeps me intrigued and growing with the practices as I continue on life’s journey. I hope I do justice to the practices I share and the teachers who passed them on to me.
Who should join? Anyone interested. Age and ability do not matter. All classes listed on the public schedule are “beginner friendly” and open to all. The depth and variety of what these practices impart to us means they hold treasures for anyone who sincerely engages with a willing and open mind.
Why join this particular tai chi group? It gives me great joy to hear people say that I make tai chi, qigong and taking care of one’s self fun. We all need to take care of our mental and physical well-being and if it’s “work” or “hard” that’s not fun and we might not want to do it. I work hard to make taking care of ourselves easy, informative and enjoyable because life is hard enough as it is and taking care of ourselves doesn’t have to be!
So who am I? ShiFu Lea Williamson has been studying chi arts for almost 30 years! Wow! I’m getting up there! Not only do have knowledge and experience in a huge variety of chi arts, I’m also a clinical massage therapist for 20 years so have a HUGE understanding anatomy and physiology and loads of experience with adapting to injuries. On a more personal note: I surf, bike, garden and love to read. And I really hope to share chi arts with you soon!

Tai chi imparts numerous health benefits. Some of these include: improved balance, coordination and agility; better focus and decision-making; reducation of chronic pain; boosts immune functions; reduces the effects of stress; significantly enhances self-esteem and body image; balances blood pressure and cardiovascular functions; more core strength and flexibility; a sense of calm and belonging in the world.
Traditional Sun 73 Tai Chi takes participants deep into a long, flowing routine that imparts a sense of lightness, strength and agility while creating better balance and mindfulness. To learn this long form takes serious commitment and dedication.
2 sessions per week are being offered: Wednesday evenings 6:30-7:45pm INSIDE the Indian Harbor Beach Recreation Center and Saturday mornings 10:00-11:30 OUTSIDE in Gleason Park at the same facility; we meet on the north side of the lake.

At about 150 years old, Sun Style tai chi is the most modern incarnation of the moving mediation called tai chi or tai chi chuan. It was developed by undefeated martial arts master Sun Lu Tang who was known to possess great energy skills. Unlike the other 4 traditional styles of tai chi, Sun Style places emphasis on awareness of breath throughout the entire practice. This emphasis on dan tien breathing brings more energy/chi into the flow which is built upon the agile stepping techniques found in BaGua Zhan.
Master Sun Lu Tang also built the tai chi routine to develop a lightness of being into the practitioner. The high stance of the routine, the softness of the steps and the use of dan tien breathing all combine in a particular alchemy that gives Sun Style tai chi practitioners the ability to seemingly float on their feet while also remaining solidly grounded. Sun Style tai chi is so highly refined that the Sun 73 tai chi routine is used in Olympic competition over other styles of tai chi.
To learn more about Sun Style, Master Sun Lu Tang and why I choose to teach Sun style over all the other styles of tai chi I've studied through the decades, check out this blog post: Sun Style-The Evolution of Tai Chi.
