  • First Thursday Salons: THE COMPLETE SONGS OF EDVARD GRIEG: EARLY EXPLORATIONS

    With this, the third installment of the complete songs of Edvard Grieg, Resonance at SOMA Towers and the Northwest Edvard Grieg Society present Laura Loge, soprano, Alan Dunbar, baritone, and Knut Erik Jensen, piano in The Complete Songs of Edvard Grieg: Early Explorations. Beginning with the very first song composed by Edvard Grieg, Laura, Alan, and Knut Erik will present songs by Grieg set to German poetry as well as several opuses composed early in his career, during and after his studies and prior to his return to Norway. Continue this exploration of Grieg’s complete songs as three specialists in his repertoire guide you through a program of rarely-heard and well-loved songs alike. First Thursday Salons are inspired by a 19th century tradition of informal and intimate performances at home. Audiences are encouraged to wear comfortable attire, bring their friends, and engage in a highly social and interactive musical experience. Pacific MusicWorks Underground's Tasting Notes season finale features San Francisco Bay Area viola da gamba superstar William Skeen with harpsichordist and PMW Underground director Henry Lebedinsky performing virtuosic music for the gamba by some of the baroque rock stars that made it the electric guitar of the 18th century. Music by Bach, Marais, Forqueray, and Graun will take this one up to 11! The concert features beloved lieder by Franz Schubert, classic melodies by Reynaldo Hahn, new masterpieces by Jake Heggie, unearthed gems by Othmar Schoeck, and a monumental song cycle by Benjamin Britten. This program captures the intimacy, directness, and emotional honesty of art song.
