This Small group has been meeting every fourth Wednesday of the month since its first meeting on January 25 2017, to alternate between study and some meditative practice. No prior experience required. Just be interested.
If you are interested since we meet in a private home in Berkeley, you must contact me via email to get the address of the meetings. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org
Our meeting's so far have been more a core group of 4 -6 members and we have just been working on the basics of the Kabbalah system: I've been explaining a simple version of the Luria creation myth, and going through the basics of the history of the Kabbalah texts, and the components of the Sefiroth. We are now on the verge of interactive reading of the text and then perhaps we will get to meditation and guided meditations.
To best understand this group and who will be leading it, I shall tell you about myself what I am and am not.
I am not a master of Kabbalah.
I am not a rabbi.
I can’t read Hebrew.
I have no great secret knowledge which I wish to sell to you.
If you want to be lectured to, if you want to be taught great wisdom, great secret knowledge, to learn from a Master directly, then well, you can do that and find that elsewhere. There are plenty of people who will be willing to have you take their courses and study with them. I do not believe that Jewish Kabbalah contains the wisdom of the ages, nor do I believe that it is THE secret spiritual practice of Divine wisdom and knowledge, nor do I think it should be of much interest to non-Jews, though it has been and still is. I do not think it contains secrets that science has yet to learn.
I do not think it has any insights in the actual scientific explanation of how the universe either was created or how it works. I read physics, astronomy, cosmology, and other scientific texts to explore those ideas. I don’t look for any insights in Jewish mystical texts on those topics.
I did have a mystical experience when I was nine years old that has shaped my life and my interest in religion, philosophy, and mysticism.
I am interested in exploring how Jews have sought to connect to the Infinite and its mysteries, and what they had to say about those acts and events of connection.
I have read and great deal in English on Jewish Kabbalah. I even read and studied, in English, some Jewish Kabbalah texts. I have been doing this since I was 20 in 1974. It is this reading and studying that I can draw upon and what I can offer in our studies together.
I have read and done study into the history of Occult Hermetic Qabalah and read some of those texts as well. I have also studied the history of Christian Cabalah.
You don’t need to know or read Hebrew, though at the very minimum you will get to play with the letters and so either you have some familiarity with the Alef Bet or you’ll pick it up along the way in the group.
All I ask of you is to buy a single book. The text we will use to explore the vast literature of Jewish mystical tradition is Daniel Matt’s The Essential Kabbalah. I hope you are interested and want to journey with me to explore our vast heritage.
I will be closing down this group because it is on the verge of being self-sustaining and continuous.
To those who come across this and are interested in joining I guess you will need to have a catch up meetup on another day to bring you up to speed. If you are serious about joining and attending contact me at email@example.com.
