We believe that it is impossible for us to properly describe us through the screen you are viewing this on. As we are not an institution that can be bought or sold, nor are we a glass-stained building towering high above the ground that you can take a picture of, but rather, we are people. And people can never, and will never, be fully experienced through a screen.
You see, people are experienced through the senses, the simple touch of a friendly hug, the emotion of joy that comes through laughter, the unique gestures and phrases that each of us have, and these are things that we cannot fully replicate through this screen. Sure, technology has made it easier than ever to connect with people through Instagram feeds, Skype calls, and Snapchatstories; but is all of this just seeing, rather than actually experiencing?
That is up to you to decide, but we believe that people are best experienced in-person. So, if you really want to know us than you will have just to meet us, plain and simple. But use this page as a "small bite of the whole pie", or a small piece to the bigger puzzle; so that when you do finally meet us, you have somewhere to start. We are honoured with your interest in our church community and we hope you get a small, but real, honest representation of us through this page.
IF YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW US, THAN YOU WILL JUST HAVE TO MEET US, PLAIN AND SIMPLE
This is a brutally honest description of our church community. Our church community is a great fit for a lot of people, but it's not for everyone, and we know that. We do things differently, and not everyone likes that, but we believe honesty is the first step to trust, so we hope that you can respect our openness.
Well, here we go:
We are a creative family of misfits who have been changed by The Creator God's wholehearted acceptance of us despite our vices, depravity, and brokenness. We don't put people into boxes, we embrace them with love, no matter what their social demographic, sexual orientation, gender, or background. We love, and let God do the creative life-changing work in people. We celebrate this love together every Sunday and express this love, as loud as we can, and to as many people as we can, Monday to Saturday. We do things differently. Our church family will never try to pretend to be something we are not. We are broken people in need of The Creator God to constantly be putting us back together.
We are a church family who has been through a lot over the years. We have been through the best of times, and have been through the worst of times, but time and time again we have continued to see the undeserved grace, love, and mercy of our Creator God, given to us freely. We have needed many chances, and will never confess that we will ever have it all together. We have failed more times than we have won. Because of this, we are a church community who believes that second chances are just not enough. We believe that sometimes you need chance, after chance, after chance, (and you may never get it right), but we believe, it's our passionate attempt that God loves to work with.WE ARE A CHURCH COMMUNITY WHO BELIEVES SECOND CHANCES ARE JUST NOT ENOUGH
We are a church family who strives to emulate the life of Jesus as described within the Bible, our owners manual, that shows us how to get the most out of life. We have made mistakes, are making mistakes, and will forever be making mistakes, but The Creator God, daily, keeps showering us with his perfect love. And because of this perfect love we refuse to put people into religious or theological boxes, we embrace people with love, and let God do his creative, life-changing, work.
A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY DON'T LIKE US, BUT WE'RE OK WITH THAT
We do things differently. Our church family will never try to pretend to be something we are not. We are broken people in need of The Creator God to constantly be putting us back together. A lot of people in the Christian community don't like us, but we're OK with that. And they probably have good reason to not like us, because of how far from perfect we really are. But our acceptance as a church family has never, and will never, come from people, it comes from our Creator.
So, that's us in a couple paragraphs, we don't apologize, this is who we are, and who we will always be. Our lives have been changed by the shameless love and forgiveness of our Creator, so now, whether we make friends or enemies along the way, we loudly express this love to everyone, and everything.
The culture of our church family is, and has always been, to help people in need. We believe that the Christian Community, as a whole, sometimes spends more time raising funds for their latest building project and less time actually helping people. We as a church community choose charity over indifference, and will not ignore the real problems in life.
WE BELIEVE THAT WE ARE TO BE THE CHURCH, NOT SIT IN CHURCH
We believe we are to be the church, not sit in church. So, we as a church community have decided to put our charity projects front and centre. We hold as many official major charity projects as we can operate each and every month. Our hearts breaks that we are not able to hold a major charity event every day, but our man-power and resources are limiting us at the moment.
Our goal, one day, is to be able to be a place where people can receive charitable help from our church community every day of the week. But until that day, we will keep helping people, in need, to the best of our God-given ability and to the best of our God-givenresources. But there our many unofficial charity projects hosted by individuals in our community happening every week. Whether it's individuals in our community giving the jackets off their back to people in need of one, or individuals in our community delivering hot cups of coffee to those in need on Christmas Day; our community is incomplete if we are not constantly helping people. We love the city of Edmonton, we love the people in the city of Edmonton, and we want to help those in need of an extra helping hand, thrive. It doesn't take a big event to inspire individuals in our family to show charity, and that's something we are very proud of.
Our church community is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and we are very proud to be apart of the artistic, and colourful, Whyte Avenue community, which is located in the historical Old Strathcona neighbourhood of the city of Edmonton. We are new to the Whyte Avenue community and the Old Strathcona neighbourhood, and our church family has made some mistakes in the past in dealing, and operating within this community. But we continue, to watch and learn how our community operates, and how we can best fit into our innovative neighbourhood.
One of the ways that we choose to intentionally stay connected to our community is by hosting as many Community Events as we can in one month. Whether it's by hosting a free gourmet breakfast buffet, a free movie and popcorn night, or live local music events, we strive to be connected to our neighbourhood, and we hope to serve our neighbourhood for many years to come.
WE ARE PROUD TO CALL WHYTE AVE. HOME
Gaining the respect, trust, and friendship of our neighbourhood is a long process, but we love our neighbourhood, and we will do whatever it takes to be a become major part of it. You can read more about the Whyte Avenue community and the historic neighborhood of Old Strathcona here.
We hold on to God being The Creator of everything we have once known, everything we know now, and everything we will ever know.
We hold on to Jesus being the very son of God sent to our tiny blue and green planet to show us an IRL, (in-real-life) God-example, of how to get the most out of life.
We hold on to the punishment for our sins that Jesus took, in our place, on the cross, and because Jesus took our punishment once and for all, we are already forgiven by God. God has forgive you, me, and everyone else living here on earth. There is nothing we can ever do that can separate us from this forgiveness and love, all we have to do is accept it.
WE ARE ALREADY FORGIVEN BY GOD
We hold on to the fact that Jesus did nothing without the Spirit of God, and when Jesus left, he gave us this same Spirit to guide us in our everyday lives. We believe that when we let this Spirit of God completely consume us, this Spirit gives us boldness, comfort, communication, joy, guidance, inspiration, and purpose.
We hold on to the fact that, just like Jesus, we also cannot accomplish anything, without the help of the Spirit of God.
We hold on to God, The Creator, being a good Dad to us, never trying to hurt us or trying to inflict pain upon us, but rather, wanting the very best for us, his children.
WE HOLD ON TO GOD BEING THE ULTIMATE CREATOR. HE IS THE ARTIST CONSTANTLY ADDING NEW COLOURS TO THE PAINTING OF OUR LIVES.
We hold on to God being the ultimate creator. He's the artist constantly adding new colours to the painting of our lives. He's the potter, constantly molding the piece of clay, that is our human existence, into something beautiful. He's the restorer, constantly restoring us, the old pieces of art, into something new and fresh. He is the director, who sees us, the extra, the leftover, and promotes us to the leading role. The very nature of God is to create, so what is stopping him from creating something new in us, each and everyday.
We hold on to all created things, from the ground to the sky, and believe it is our duty to persevere and keep creation safe and thriving in it's natural habitat.
We hold on to the fact that we are all broken pieces in need of The Creator to complete us.
We hold on to the wholeness that the Gospel bring to each of our lives, without this wholeness, we live a life without purpose and direction.
