Yoga Sutra Study

Have you ever been curious about the philosophical, historical, and cultural background of Yoga? Do you want to invigorate your own personal spiritual practice? For two millennia practitioners have looked to the Yoga Sūtra for guidance with meditation and as a tool for spiritual discipline. Come discover what this ancient text can tell us about how to experience life more completely and unlock our inherent spiritual potential while gaining an in-depth understanding of Yoga and other Indian philosophical systems.

What to expect from our Yoga Sūtra Class:

First of all, although this class can deal with some pretty erudite material, ALL LEVELS ARE WELCOME. Cogen will do his best to give advanced practitioners the knowledge that they seek, and to give the beginners the review and background that they need.

Our class is a mixture of discussion, lecture, chanting, singing and meditation. We are going through an extensive, in-depth process of providing a through exegesis for each sūtra in chronological order. Cogen will draw upon the works of both modern authors (Bryant, Taimni, Iyengar, Satchidananda, Feuerstein, Wood, etc.) and well as traditional Sanskrit commentators (Vyāsa, Miśra, Bhoja Raja, Hariharananda, Vijñānabhikṣu, etc.) The format of the class will be as follows:

1. We begin by chanting some traditional Sanskrit verses and benedictions. Students either have them memorized, or a hymn book is available for new students.

2. Cogen Bohanec will then lecture and facilitate a discussion about one particular Sūtra.

3. After the lecture/discussion we will have a recitation of the Yoga Sūtra as far as the most advanced student has memorized (usually the first 3 chapters, but sometimes shorter).

4.We will often have a brief Kirtan, or sing a traditional devotional Hymn. Recently we have been working on the Hanuman Chalisa.

5.  Sometimes this is followed by a silent meditation anywhere from 5-15 minutes.

6. We close again by reciting our benedictions.

Cogen Bohanec is the main Instructor, presenter and facilitator. However, this group can attract a variety of people with unique backgrounds in the field of yoga, and the class discussion can become very interesting. Please feel free to present your own particular vantage point, whether it be from the perspective of an Abrahamic faith, a particular school of Hindu devotionalism or philosophy, as a Buddhist, or even as an atheistic or agnostic. The format of this class favors discussion, critical thinking, and interfaith dialogue over dogma.
