What we're about

Are you someone who loves (or would like to try) outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, or cycling, but becasue of your weight or other physical limitations you feel uncomfortable joining other outdoor-related groups? If so, this group may be what you’re looking for!

I have been overweight my entire adult life, and while I’m passionate about outdoor fun, it has been a challenge to be part of outdoor-focused social groups, both because I need a slower pace and because it’s uncomfortable being the only overweight person in a group full of fit people!

I believe that spending time outdoors provides mental/physical benefits, regardless of a person’s fitness level. My intention for Big Adventure is to provide a safe, non-judgmental social space for people who are overweight (or anyone else who thinks they might benefit from a slower pace) to enjoy outdoor activities in the company of other likeminded people. Activities will range from local walks/bike rides/paddles to longer day trips and possibly weekend camping and rockhounding trips, if there’s interest. I’ll also plan occasional bike maintenance nights for anyone who would like to learn how to do basic repairs to their bike.

To keep events social and comfortable for everyone, WE WILL STAY TOGETHER AS A GROUP AND GO AT THE PACE OF THE SLOWEST PERSON. While many events will be open to kids and leashed pets, some meetups may be listed as adults only for safety reasons.

Please note that while I am happy to share what little I know with others, I AM NOT A TRAINED OUTDOOR GUIDE AND I CANNOT ACCEPT LIABILITY FOR INJURIES SUSTAINED BY EVENT PARTICIPANTS. Joining Big Adventure and attending events, constitutes your acknowledgement and agreement that YOU ACCEPT SOLE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF ANY DEPENDENTS YOU BRING TO AN EVENT.

Though it shouldn’t need to be said, please also note that BIG ADVENTURE IS AN INCLUSIVE GROUP THAT WELCOMES ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND. If you feel you would be unable to interact respectfully with people of various races, genders, sexual orientations, religions/philosophies, physical abilities, body sizes etc., please don’t join this group. Anyone expressing intolerance toward another participant will be asked to leave the event and will be removed from the group.
