Dr. Kostas Tzoumas: "Big Data looks tiny from Stratosphere"

This time we have a fantastic research topic: Dr. Kostas Tzoumas will show us the details of the Stratosphere.eu Project. It shows the possible architecture of the next generation systems for big data processing. This is the only huge German and perhaps European research project in this area but you can git clone it and start working with the system right now.

For those who can not await this talk there is a chance to get more information earlier at the Stratosphere Summit 2013 some days before. If you are interested please register at http://stratosphere.eu/events/2013/summit.html and spread the word.

Hope to see you all!

Toller Überblick über die verschiedenen verfügbaren System. Gute Vorträge, angenehm fachlich fundiert.

Eine Pause zwischen den Vorträgen wäre gut gewesen.

Abstract of this talk (Part II):

Stratosphere is compatible with the Hadoop ecosystem and is developed by three Universities in the Berlin area in Germany, together with a growing open-source developer and user community. In this talk, I will (time permitting) cover Stratosphere from a user's perspective, some aspects of the internal workings of the system, and I will provide an overview of the current research and open source activities worldwide related to next-generation Big Data management systems.

Abstract of this talk (Part I):

Big Data analysis is diversifying to use cases that require low latency and go beyond functionality that naturally fits the MapReduce paradigm. We created the Stratosphere platform to support the next generation of data analysis needs. Stratosphere is a new parallel data management engine that combines a unique set of features for Big Data management: it provides a declarative language for the specification of data analysis programs, analyzes data “in situ” by embracing external data sources (including HDFS), features a rich parallelization model that goes beyond MapReduce, and deeply embeds user-defined code in the system’s query optimizer and runtime. In addition, Stratosphere efficiently executes iterative algorithms, widening the use case of such systems to fields such as Machine Learning and graph analysis.
