Cancer Genomics and Data Sciences

  • Feb 16, 2014 · 1:00 PM
  • SGI Auditorium (enter through Patio door with red umbrellas)

These meetups are for genome re-sequencing analysis on Hadoop clusters, Amazon EMR and other cloud platforms with Big Data.  Industry experts provide hands-on sessions on different cloud platforms for genome analysis along with statistical analysis in graph databases and other no-SQL databases.  Students will also be speakers for topics related to Cancer Genomics.

One parent is allowed with each student. Students must come with laptop with Java7 and must have Amazon EC2, Amazon EMR and Amazon S3 accounts.

Dr. Sanhita Sarkar is Co-organizer for these meetups.

BTW, for the students who were getting Termination Error - Validation Error when running your Hadoop job on Amazon EMR, please check to see if your access keys are set up (ours wasn't, and once we set it, the job ran without problems). You can do this by clicking on "Security Credentials" under the "My Account/Console" link on the top right of aws.amazon.com, then expanding "Access Keys (Access Key ID and Secret Access Key)" - if you don't see a key pair that is set to status Active, you need to create one - it automatically becomes active when you create it. Rerun your job once this is set up and it should (hopefully) just work.

Thank you very much Sujit. That should fix the problem. THANK YOU AGAIN. You should provide some hands-on lessons at the next meetup. Everyone has the JAR file I distributed.

You are welcome, and regarding the hands-on thing, I have some ideas which I will run by you in a separate thread.

Excellent. The walk thru on AWS for EMR jar deployment was very helpful ..Pls do post notes of the session if possible & the jar file too. Thank you.

Excellent initiative for introducing kids to data science. Kudos to Dr Shyam Sarkar for his initiative, and nice presentation by Ayush (high school presenter) and the adult speakers as well.

I'm confused by "one parent is allowed with each student". Is this a Meetup for high-school students ? Who is allowed to attend ?

Anyone interested in cancer genomics is welcome to these meetups but the hands-on sessions are mainly for high school students. There will be one or more student speaker(s) in these meetups. Some people working in industry also like to learn about Java and cloud computing. They can also join these sessions to get exposure. We invite experienced people from industry to become speakers, mentors and sponsors of these meetups.
