• Contra Dance with us!

    First Congregational Church

WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! ________________________ Tonight's band is Big Fun and Richard Ades is our caller. Note that there is no 3rd Saturday dance due to the Easter holiday; the church will be in use. ________________________ Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 11:00. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Dancers who are brand new to contra come as my guest and receive a coupon for second dance free as well! Be sure to sign in at the desk on the meetup list. Otherwise it's $8.00 adults, $4.00 ages 12-26 ($7 and $3 for members). Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. For more information contact me or check out our website: www.bigscioty.com

Featuring Gabrielle Lanza, Kristen Planeaux, Andrew Taylor and Christopher Wood, the Cincy-based Ripples offer an ever-changing blend of instruments and voices that keeps dancers entranced and energized. We’ve brought them to Columbus many times over the years, and we’d love to keep bringing them back—but Kristen and Gabrielle are leaving the region. Help us give them a proper sendoff. Saturday’s dances will be provided by Stephanie Schlie, a Columbus caller known for her fun-loving (and pun-loving) personality. ________________________ Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 11:00. • Contra Dance with us! Contra dance with bonus electro contra session

    First Congregational Church

This weekend’s Big Scioty Contra Dance will run longer than usual so that we can include a late-night session of electro contra. If you’ve never tried this electronically fueled version of contra, now’s your chance! For most of the evening, caller Frank Buschelmann will lead us through an assortment of regular contra dances accompanied by Strawberry Space Jam. Though the band may not be familiar to you, its members hail from other bands that probably are. Kristen Planeaux plays keyboard for the Ripples, Ben Smith fiddles with the Mean Lids, and Vickie Stohl frequently plays percussion for Baba Yaga’s Stew. Around 10:30 p.m., Ben will put down his fiddle and transform himself into his alter ego, DR Shadow. This deejay extraordinaire will then provide an hour’s worth of driving, club-type music while Frank announces the moves. For a preview of what to expect, check out Frank and DR Shadow’s electro contra session at Winter WarmUp 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFnG2C6hU24 Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 12:00.
