What we're about

Hello and welcome to Bike, Hike, EXPLORE! This group is for anyone who enjoys biking, hiking and exploring the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond in both sun and snow at a recreational and social pace (10-18mph cycling | 2-3mph hiking).

Bike, Hike, EXPLORE! (BHE) invites conscientious and cooperative individuals who enjoy sharing their love of the outdoors with others - those who value developing a sense of community more than individual competition and chasing PR's (personal records on Strava). The group is best suited for folks who appreciate a good workout, but also want to be social while taking in the fresh air and pausing to appreciate the beautiful views.

Most BHE events are designed for strong intermediate-level cyclists and hikers with a "tourist" disposition. This means that we enjoy being "present" in our surroundings and appreciate opportunities to observe wildlife and other points of interests we pass along the way. Group size will typically be 12 or under to foster friendship and to maximize the enjoyment of the places we visit - not only for us - but also for other trail users.

How do I sign-up for an event?

When signing-up for a BHE activity, read through all the event details and assess conservatively whether you can complete the activity successfully. If you're confident that you'll do fine, click to RSVP. Some activities will have a wait-list that will need the event host to add you to the "Going List". Others will automatically add you as soon as you RSVP. To help you figure out if an activity is right for you - all events are categorized as EASY, MODERATE, and STRENUOUS (http://www.meetup.com/Bike-Hike-EXPLORE/pages/21411214/Difficulty_Ratings_and_Details_for_Day_Trips/) and the variables used to determine the level of difficulty is based on the assumption that you are in good physical health and exercise regularly.

Is there a membership fee to join BHE?

There is no cost to join the group, but there is usually a $5 Ride or Hike Contribution to gain the meeting location and route map of one-day local events (Within 1.5 hour's drive). "Away" events (more than 1.5 hour's drive) will be $10 due to the higher costs with scouting out and leading these events. Multi-day trips will be costed out to cover planning costs, permit fees and campsite reservations or lodging costs as appropriate. There is also a free monthly "Welcome Ride" or "Welcome Hike" for shy folks who want to come and check out the group before committing to a more demanding event.

How do I join BHE?

Joining and participating with 'Bike, Hike, EXPLORE!' is simple:

1) You upload a clear, authentic, facial photo of yourself that makes it easy to recognize you at our Meetups.

2) You answer the profile questions. The questions are designed to enable organizers to see at a glance whether a participant's skill and fitness will allow the participant to complete an event successfully. Having a good fit between a participant's skill-set and fitness with the demands of a specific event increases the safety and enjoyment of the event for everyone involved.
