Fireworks Pizza Ride

Details

The Fireworks Pizza Ride has become one of our group's most popular and most requested rides.

The Rides

Three routes of varying length and difficulty are available for this ride. Please read the descriptions carefully and choose the one that best suits your interest and abilities. All three routes start and end at the same location.

Ride Option 1 (Easiest)

This route follows the Washington & Old Dominion Trail westward to Purcellville. After stopping for a break at Purcellville Station you will then head back to Leesburg. It is the shortest and least hilly of the three routes.

Distance: 21.1 mi

Total Climb: 982 ft

Max Grade: 6.4% (Route 7 overpass on Charles Town Pike)

Bicycle Type(s): Any

Comments:

· If your average pace is in the 10 - 14 mph range and you don't like climbing hills, this is the route you should choose.

· Since it is nearly impossible to get lost on the W&OD Trail, you can easily modify the ride to make it either longer or shorter.

This route is fun on any type of bike but is especially well suited for those with hybrids or mountain bikes as it is a relatively straight and flat path.

Option 2 (Harder)

This route starts out along the W&OD Trail just as Route 1 above but leaves the trail just after mile 4 for a trek through over rolling country roads to the historic and quaint village of Waterford. After leaving the village we will return to the W&OD around mile 12 and continue our ride to the end of the trail in Purcellville where we’ll stop for a break to rest & refresh ourselves. From Purcellville you will ride mostly along the W&OD back to Leesburg, but you also have the option for additional fun pedaling up Irene and Meadowlark Roads and a fast downhill along Dry Mill Road.

Distance: 27.1 mi

Total Climb: 1656 ft

Max Grade: 10.4% (Meadowlark Road)

Bicycle Type(s): Road or cyclocross

Comments:

· This is a great ride for anyone wanting a scenic ride while working on improving their hill climbing ability.

Option 3 (Hardest)

This ride option is for all of you who just love climbing hills! It is the same as Ride Option 2 above but includes and mid ride extension that takes you over Loyalty, Taylorstown, and Stumptown Roads, adding 14 miles to the length nearly doubling the climb elevation!

Distance: 41.1 mi

Total Climb: 3020 ft

Max Grade: 11.3% (Taylorstown Road)

Bicycle Type(s): Road or cyclocross

Comments:

· This ride is for masochists! Especially this early in the season.

· The max grade is not that much greater than ride #2. However, he amount of time spent climbing is significantly longer!

After the Ride...Pizza!

After the ride, we'll meet for refreshing beverages, delicious food, and great conversation at Firework's Pizza. Fireworks Pizza, which is located on Harrison Street SE just 2 blocks north of the W&OD Trail, is well known for their great pizza, yet has an impressive list of non-pizza offerings as well.
