What we're about

This is a group for anyone who has the desire to explore the many "rails to trails" bike paths and/or other more leisurely bike routes (weekdays, weeknights, and weekends) with a nice group of friends within a reasonable driving distance of the Southern Chester County/Wilmington/Philadelphia base area. Bike pace might vary according to terrain, but basically a nice leisurely safe pace where we can get some great photos or just picnic for a while. Some of these rides include the Schuylkill River Trail (Philadelphia), Perkiomen Trail (Oaks), New Hope area trails, Heritage Rail Trail (York), Struble Trail ( Downingtown ). All members will be able to suggest rides they wish to do by using the suggestion area on the group site. We will also do trips to central and western PA which have many incredible rails to trails rides as well. There will also be weekend bike riding adventures. Some of these include the C&O Canal, Pine Creek Rail Trail (Wellsboro ), and Greenbrier River Trail ( WV ). These will involve bike camping and/or car camping. We will also meet on occasion to plan events and give members a chance to suggest rides they would like to do. Looking forward to meeting other people who are also outdoor biking enthusiasts.

Bike, Canoe and Walk total of 10 miles for fun and charity, canoes supplied!

The Event The start and finish lines are in front of the West Bradford Fire House and the Marshalton Inn, outside of West Chester, Chester County Pennsylvania. Racers will travel a total of 10 miles over the course. Participants pedal the first leg (a 2.3 mile bike race), paddle the second leg (a 3.0 mile canoe race; two-person canoes require a partner), pace the third leg (a 2.4 mile fast walk race; disqualification if running during the race), and pedal the fourth leg (a 2.3 mile return bike race). Canoes are supplied-no outside boats or tag alongs on bikes. The Marshalton Triathlon is Chester County’s premier community and sporting event that has flourished for forty years and counting. First run in 1973, it is considered one of the longest continually running triathlons in the country. With it’s first running primarily recreational for the patrons of the Marshalton Inn, the race has become an annual tradition for families and friends from all portions of Chester County. The race begins and ends in the village of Marshallton, and participants race over ten miles of beautiful Chester County. The race includes bicycling, canoeing and fast walking. The Marshalton Triathlon has grown from sixty competitors, in that first year, to include as many as 2200 participants and a thousand or more spectators. A unique feature of our race is that it is open to beginners; with a shorter race course than most traditional triathlons, allowing the 8-16 year old age group participants to average 20% of total participants. The result is that our event creates opportunities for entire families to participate in the race and fosters multiple generations of participation and spectating. The Cause The Marshalton Triathlon is a volunteer organization, staffed by nearly a hundred volunteers that donates its proceeds to outstanding local organizations. Since 1976, The West Bradford Fire Company (WBFC) has been the primary benefactor of the Marshalton Triathlon proceeds, receiving over 500 thousand dollars over many years and 20 thousand dollars or more on an annual basis (28K in 2014). WBFC is staffed with an all-volunteer crew that is dedicated to rescue and prevention in West Bradford, East Bradford and Newlin townships. West Bradford Fire Company was founded in 1953, includes approximately 45 members and responds to[masked] incidents per year. The WBFC uses the Triathlon proceeds to help defray operational costs and provide financial assistance to members who suffer misfortunes as a result of volunteering. A more recent benefactor of the Marshalton Triathlon is the Marshallton Conservation Trust (MCT). First organized in 2009 by several Marshallton residents, the Trust is motivated by the desire to see the Marshallton area return to a safe, walkable community and its rich history preserved. Marshallton Conservation Trust is committed to preserving the historic integrity and the quality of life in this very special area for future generations. I did two tours with them in Wisconsin that went great. First year in Wisconsin (northwoods) I rode with a buddy and Iowa folks who did 14. He is slower so we would stop and wait here and there for him Second year in Wisconsin (Door County) on four out of five days I rode with Indiana folks at sixteen seventeen. My buddy rode with his fiancée at about ten, I rode with them one day, as he is my friend. Both years some folks went faster Some slower They didn’t herd us They marked the routes and use ride with gps too Everyone gets a little name tag to hang on the back of your bike , so they and we know who is with group. Groups / folks ride whatever speed they want and stop wherever they want to eat, shop, take a picture whatever. No pressure. They have food stops and support vehicles My guess is I will ride 14 to 16 and stop a lot for pictures, etc. It's a vacation not a race. With over 140 people someone will be a pace you like Most of the people were from the Midwest and super friendly They had free beer, wine and soda every night and a happy hour. We had pools at every hotel. It’s run by a Midwest organization Www.pedalacrosswisconsin.com do not confuse with "ride across Wisconsin", for December they come to Florida because Wisconsin is cold in winter. You would need to register and pay with host organization, your RSVP here just shows you are interested. Lots of attractions in key west, you can discuss the night before with others what you want to do, http://www.floridakeysbikeride.com/Attractions.html Pedal Across Wisconsin (PAW) has 73 rooms reserved and are about half sold out already. They anticipate being sold out by June. On registration put my name for prior guest (Paul Schlimme), and "meetup" for club name. On registration we added the night before for $85 each. I suggest send reservation sooner than later, and add the night before as an option. http://www.floridakeysbikeride.com/Register.html On my past rides most hotels had two floors (not all with elevators) so I requested first floor as we plan to ride a tandem. You can ask to be near us in hotel (Paul Schlimme) or not, no biggie either way. You can ask PAW "try" to find you a roommate or post on here if you need one.
