Biking from Tai Wai to North-east New Territories

  • December 4 · 10:00 AM
  • Tai Wai MTR Exit A & go to behind #43 Shing Ho Road

This biking trip will be fast and is the longest trip (90 Km) for those fit and experienced bikers only.

Difficult Level: 3.5 stars.

Please refer to this map and go to the bike rental shop directly.

Link of map

The trip is on main roads, biking lanes , and narrow winding country roads. The route is Tai Wai - Tai Po - Tai Mei Tuk - Wu Kau Tang - Luk Keng - Sha Tau Kok - Lung Yeuk Tau - Fanling - Tai Po - Tai Wai, estimated 90 Km in distance. A 3 Km uphill road going up 110 meter is the most difficult part in this trip.

In this journey, you will see the new and old, the city and villages, the rivers, the sea and the mountains in these areas.

We'll bike along rivers and farmlands, visiting old temples and churches, beautiful parks and walled villages.

At noon, we'll lunch in a village home restaurant having traditional Poon choi ($100 each).

Poon choi "big bowl feast" is a traditional Chinese dish from the walled villages of the New Territories. It is a Cantonese cuisine served in large metal basins.

We'll have our dinner with street food. Back to Tai Wai at 10 p.m. ( You cannot leave earlier, this is a journey in a loop)

* You can rent bikes at about $70 or bring your own.  You need to go  fast and good biking skill is a must. Some country lanes are narrow and winding, and also need to bike on roads with a few cars.

* You must wear a helmet and gloves, bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Water can be bought along the way.

You can rent a helmet at $10 or buy a helmet in this bike shop.

What's the difference between 700C and 26 inch wheels?

Although this event is temporary full, there may be somebody withdraw later. If you want to join but worrying about the 90 Km is too much. You can quit earlier by taking a train from Sheung Shui back to Tai Wai with your bike. Then the distance will be cut short to about 60 Km. You can rsvp waiting first to see you have a chance or not.

700c are road wheels for road bikes. Tyres generally much slimmer 23mm to 25mm widths
26" wheels are generally for wider mountain bikes tyres. Usually 1.5 to 2.3 inch width.

    December 1

    • David W

Yes, 26" wheels are generally stronger because of the shorter spokes and ideal for MTB

But it is possible to put a 700c on a mountain one as long as it has the correct brake surface ( if it still uses rim brakes or has a disc brake hubs fitted. I have this very arrangement for my mountain bike. Two sets or wheels. One for off road and one for on road.

Hi Alfred, could I ask Kaye to join as well? She was there with Ching on our bike tour earlier.

I think so. Poon Choi should be enough adding one person and maybe someone will withdraw.
