Birmingham Adventure Group (BAG) Pages

The Birmingham Hiking Meetup Basic Info Page!

This page is for basic guidelines for the hiking meetups. This may be updated to address issues I haven't thought about yet ;)
E-mail me if you think of something I have not thought of!

What happens if it is raining? Hmmm. Well, if it is a light drizzle - the hike will still be 'on'. However, if there is thunder/lightning - we will cancel it. If you are questioning the weather call the organizer. The organizer will have a cell number listed. Don't e-mail - call!

Time Management
Show up on TIME! Especially when we meet somewhere other than a trail head! No one likes to wait around for someone when they are 'on their way' and give vague location points such as 'I am on 65'.
I try say how long the hikes will be in the original posting of the hike. If you have to be somewhere and need to leave early - you are more than welcome to turn around at some point and head home. I am sometimes a little off on my estimations on how long the hikes will be - but I will always give mileage on the hikes to help you out time wise.

Can I bring my Kid?
As a general rule - if you want to bring your kids/niece/nephew/brother/sister/cousin, they must be at least 14 years of age. If we have a hike that will be kid friendly - we will post that. Typically Tannehill and Moss Rock Preserve are kid friendly b.c there are lots of turn around points and the terrain is pretty wide and flat. If the hike is hosted by an outside organization then their specific age rules apply.

If we go out of the B'ham Metro Area, then we will probably be eating on the hike. We will post this info. Bring a sandwich/snack/water. This will be posted in the hike description.

So far we haven't had any problems with carpooling to the hikes outside of Birmingham. Make sure you bring CASH for gas if you don't offer up your car to drive. Be willing to drive! Don’t be ‘that guy’ that never offers up! Chronic Offenders of Stingy Driving will be noted.
If you don’t want to carpool with strangers – that is fine! Meet us at the trail head of the given hike. E-mail the Organizer with plenty of notice and find out exactly where we will meet.

It is up to the organization that leads a hike in regards to dogs. Please consult the hike leader about dog rules.

Cats are forbidden on the hikes. This is not up for discussion.

First Aid / Safety
Your hike leader typically carries a basic first aid kit yet we can not guarantee the quality of care you may receive in the event that you need help. Do know that some hikes are in wilderness areas where you are in a delayed help situation. Delayed help is defined as being more than an hour from definitive care. Travel into the backcountry with hike groups are at your own risk. Know where you are going and know your level of conditioning and endurance. If you have any concern, discuss the hike in detail with the leader before you go.

Social Etiquette
The Birmingham Hiking Meetup is NOT your new dating pool. If you happen to come to one of the hikes and meet a nice girl or boy you are interested in, great! Make sure the attraction is reciprocated and go on your merry way. You don’t want to be that person who has dated 25% of the meetup members though. Other members will note you as a Chronic Offender just like the guy who never offers their vehicle for carpooling. Basically – this meetup is to meet other like minded individuals who want to spend sometime outside! Have a good time, meet new people and make new friends!

Fun times are not guaranteed but will most likely be had. It is up to you to make the best of it!

It is a requirement by most organizations that you sign a waiver and release form. If you are hiking with an outside organization you may be asked to sign a waiver.
