Establishment of TBFSA

Firstly, please see the directions to CodeBridge (where the Meetup will be held) here: http://www.codebridge.co.za/directions.htm

The default address provided through Meetup and Google Maps is kaput, like FIAT currency.

So we need to actually get out there with Bitcoin in terms of promoting/advertising. It is important that we discuss the establishment of The  Bitcoin Foundation of South Africa and what roles need to be filled in order to make this a success. I have been in contact with the international company who requires us to meet certain criteria before they allow us to be affiliated.

We'll need a website made up and looked after, people to run the promotional aspect and others to fill various admin positions. Most important would be people to assist businesses to accept Bitcoin (Sonja and Jurgen, I'm looking at you) as well as releasing statement to press regarding the development of Bitcoin in SA and to sit with the Reserve Bank on finding into Bitcoin if needed.

We will follow this with a questions and answers session for any newbies.

Sorry about the demo fail... Url to check for yourselves: http://demo.merchant.bitx.co.za (Yes,it's only http for staging)

The bitcoin receive address on the invoice is a testnet3 address. If you want to play around, please choose a cheap item on the store and then you can pay for it using the wallet at http://tpfaucet.appspot.com/a/bitxmerchant (there's only 0.5 testnet XBT there so please use it sparingly).

The api (not finalised yet) is visible at http://staging.merchant.bitx.co.za (username: test password: secret)

    Thanks to everyone for attending.
Okay, so a bit of clarity is needed from the heated debate last night.

The fact is that businesses who accept Bitcoin will at some stage have to be regulated, BUT NOT BITCOIN ITSELF.
What I was suggesting is that we assist with the legislation to make it easier for businesses to adopt Bitcoin.
I feel I did not make this clear enough last night.

At this stage the Foundation will be created to simply inform people and business on what Bitcoin is, the benefits of Bitcoin and list companies that accept Bitcoin as well as those who may be able to assist businesses implement Bitcoin.
An active PR wing is needed to inform the press about who we are and that this is THE place to come to for information.
We would later run workshops for businesses and events to get the name out there. If anyone wants to be a part of this please email your CV to [masked].

All roles are valid for 8 months and will then be voted on by members.

    Thanks,
    Andy

Hey Andre, I have asked Dave McGlashan to contact you as well regarding this. :) There has been a lot of inroads and work done on creating a foundation. Hopefully you can chat regarding this. I come from Gauteng so I will not be able to join unfortunately but will be in CPT in feb for BTC related business etc.

Regarding regulations etc. There are a few companies here in South Africa that have already built up a very good relationship with the reserve bank, the fsb, and other relevant institutions. I will get Dave to talk to you about that as well. :) Looking forward to chatting with you in the future.

I can help with constructing the proposal/argument in favour of virtual currencies (economic benefits, monetary effects, security and other technical goodies) to present to the Reserve Bank or other such entities.

Same here. Been in contact Jerry Brito who wrote the Mercatus Bitcoin primer, so can get tips from him. And afaik, there's been at least 2 companies who are speaking/in talks with the Reserver Bank already.

      January 23, 2014

    • Drew H.

Yes, there have been two that I know of. However, their motivation is purely for their own business interests. TBFSA would be there to advise the government in the formation of legislation and once established we would assist all businesses to accept Bitcoin. Of course we would get a lot of assistance from The Bitcoin Foundation.

Can most defnitely assist with helping people accept Bitcoins on their websites or other. Can also help design and develop the website if needed. Look forward to hearing more at the next meetup.
