What we're about

Heart Jewel Center is a dharma group in the Modern Buddhist tradition, based on the teachings of Tibetan meditation master Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. If you are interested in Buddhist teachings and practice, but lack exposure to formal teachings, you are welcome. If you want support for your solo practice, you are welcome. Sangha means community of Buddhist students and practitioners. Its one of the Three Jewels of Buddhism: Buddha, Dharma, & Sangha. Buddha, the first Jewel, refers to the mind of Buddha, which is the mind of enlightenment. Dharma, the second Jewel, refers to the “speech of Buddha”, which are the teachings given to solve the problems of human life, what causes us suffering, and through which you can reach your enlightened potential. The Sangha jewel refers to the “body of Buddha”- meaning that the Sangha brings it all to life. We need a body to realize the other Jewels, just like we need our human body to get the benefit of our experiences. In any activity that requires sustained commitment and focus, communities are essential. They provide perspective, strength, and inspiration. My practice is based on Tibetan Buddhism but all traditions are based on the teachings of the Buddha, so all are welcome. If you aren’t sure about traditions or lineages but you are interest in the roots of mindfulness, which you hear about everywhere these days, you are welcome. Mindfulness meditation is but one tool in the vast arsenal of practices the Buddha taught. At least 84,000 teachings have been inventoried and are part of a monastic education. To keep it simple, our meditation system will be based on Lamrim and Lojong, two Tibetan meditation manuals that capture the essence of all these teachings. These programs have centuries of evidence testifying to their effectiveness in training the mind, creating inner peace, and a compassionate heart. They are appropriate for beginners and experienced practitioners, as you can never exhaust all the wisdom they contain. We will read, talk, meditate, and provide support to each other, as we strive to apply these principles in our lives. Basic sitting posture and preliminary breathing practices will be taught, so don’t worry if you are new to this. We will do outdoor activities too, when the weather invites us: e.g., hanging prayer flags, animal liberation, community service, walking meditation, or meditating outdoors, and visiting sites of strong spiritual energy, such as Pathways Spiritual Sanctuary in Rochford, as well as hidden gems in the Hills. I attend teachings periodically in Denver, so others can come along too. With regular support- attendance- we can actually bring a formal dharma center into being, as many others started this way.
