A couple of years ago over a million Reddit users collaborated in making a digital work or art—over 16 million pixels were painted for an April-fools project created by Reddit. It was created as a joke, but people got very serious about it and produced something quite interesting. (Can you spot the Bitcoin and Ethereum logos?)

Now collaborative art is getting a lot more interesting with the blockchain. PixEOS is one such app. It runs on the EOS blockchain where users pay per pixel painted. To paint over an already painted pixel, a user must pay the previous painter their cost, plus an additional 35% premium which gets divvied up in various ways to all the artists in the canvas. In addition, participants are allotted pixEOS tokens in proportion to the EOS they spend, and those tokens can, in turn, earn additional EOS and pixEOS tokens via staking—that is, leaving their tokens in the system for some period of time. Between the patron bonuses, 24hr bonuses, staking rewards, etc., there is a myriad of game and payment dynamics which are all managed by the pixEOS smart contract. Finally, when a canvas is finished, a digital token representing ownership of that artwork, like a deed, is created on the blockchain. When the artwork is sold, the proceeds are distributed to all the participants involved.
