This is a meetup group for viewing and discussing primarily narrative films that evoke larger issues about life, death, identity, memory, love, art, time, and space through the medium of narrative cinema. These films might utilize supernatural phenomena, religious symbolism, or fantastical elements, but mainly in the service of making us think.
Examples: The Truman Show, Groundhog Day, Interstellar, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, A Ghost Story, Swimming to Cambodia, My Dinner with Andre, Truly Madly Deeply, Gravity, Inception, Memento, The Matrix, The Sixth Sense, A.I., Solaris (both), Defending Your Life, The Rapture, Being John Malkovich, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World….
Documentaries or films that are directly concerned with religious, supernatural, or psychic matters are not the focus of this group.
THIS IS THE RIGHT GROUP for freestyle philosophizing, intellectual curiosity, general film nerdiness, secular Buddhism, and discussions about the magic of everyday life.
The movies should not be too treacly, horrific, or morose (a little dark is OK; humor is a plus). Join and suggest some of your favorites.
We’ll go out to see theatrical releases if there’s anything that’s relevant; otherwise we will stream movies together using Netflix Party, and then discuss over dinner or after-movie drinks.
Keeping it real: Please have a current photo of yourself on your profile.
