Gather to write on Sunday, Sept. 23. All welcome!
Join us for another mini-retreat—a half-day event devoted to writing together in companionable silence. This event is open to all writers of all experience levels, working in any genre. The atmosphere is collegial and supportive, but low-key. Work on whatever you want, on your own, at your own pace. Although we've booked the space for 5 hours, you're welcome to arrive and leave whenever you like. As an aside: People have been generating AMAZING work in these sessions. It's been a joyous experience hear what people are creating in these sessions. WHAT WE'LL DO: • 12:30: Doors open (facilitator arrives at 12:30). Arrive, settle in, possibly participate in an optional activity or exercise (if there's interest). • About 1:15-1:30 p.m.: Begin writing. Although we'll be in the same large room, we'll be writing in companionable silence, talking only during breaks. If you'd like to have a conversation with someone, you're welcome to step into another room upstairs or head to a nearby restaurant. • About 4:30-4:45 p.m.: People will be invited to briefly share from their work, if they wish. (Sharing is optional and time will be limited.) No one will critique anyone's work unless the writer requests feedback. • By 5:30 p.m.: Clean up and depart. AMENITIES: The Braintree Community Arts Center is a recently converted two-story house about 3.5 miles south of South Shore Plaza on the same road (Route 37). For locals, it's in the Braintree Highlands section, just north of the Holbrook town line. We'll have the house all to ourselves for the day. It's bright, pleasant, and equipped with tables, chairs, restrooms, a fridge, a microwave oven, free parking, Wi-Fi, and awesome air conditioning. I will provide a few books for inspiration, and an extension cord and power strip for power. The Center provides tea and spring water; coffee is available nearby. WHAT TO BRING: Yourself, your writing projects and writing implements (computer or writing notebook and pen, or journal). Bring your own beverage. Feel free to bring a snack to share—after all, writing is hard work!—but that’s entirely optional. COST: $10 (cash or check made to Braintree Community Arts Center), regardless of how long you stay. This goes toward space-use costs and our Meetup fee. PLEASE bring small bills; the venue has no cash for breaking bigger ones. HOW TO RESERVE A SPOT: RSVP "yes" using Meetup's RSVP function. The RSVP list is our official headcount for the day, so it's the only way to sign up — emailing the organizer or posting messages on the site won't hold a spot. (You can also sign up directly through the venue, but there's a $2.50 processing fee.) CANCELLATIONS: If we need to cancel for any reason, we'll post a message on the Web site and e-mail all "yes" RSVPs as far in advance as possible. REMINDER ABOUT ABOUT RSVPs: Your RSVP is a reservation, and we're trusting that you'll honor it. If you can't make it, please change your RSVP from "yes" to "no" at least 24 hours in advance. If you cancel on short notice or don't show, we may need to collect your fee anyway to cover the day's costs. Hope to see you there!

What we're about

Join other local writers as we take a break from our busy, noisy lives to write quietly together in a distraction-free environment. Initially, we'll be in Braintree, Massachusetts (near the Blue Hills, reflected in the group name). Eventually, we may meet in Natick or Cambridge, Massachusetts, or in other locations.

Our group is open to adult writers (you must be 18+ to join; younger teens are welcome to attend as the guests of adult members). Typically, our Meetups begin with introductions and a few creative prompts. Then we'll spend the rest of our time writing in companionable silence, with occasional breaks. Toward the end of the Meetup, we'll invite people to share what they've written, if they wish. Our venues have everything we need: private rooms with tables and chairs, restrooms, kitchenettes, and free parking. We provide extension cords and power strips for laptops and creative-writing guides for onsite inspiration.

Down the road, we may offer writing workshops, but for now, the focus is on simply gathering to write. Signing up for events is easy. Just join this Meetup group (membership is free). Then RSVP "yes" for the events that interest you. Hope to see you soon.
