View the Great Blue Heron Rookery on the Kentucky River

A nice medium length trip on the Kentucky River, pool 7, past Shaker Landing and the Dixie Belle (top pic), under High Bridge (middle pic), past the Dix River (bottom pic) with some scenic palisades views along the way. After a 4.5 mile mile paddle, there is a group of about 50 blue heron nests along the river that spans maybe .2 miles. At this time, should have fairly large chicks in the nest. Don't recall any places to easily get out along the way, so plan to be in your boat the whole time. Total trip length, 9 miles, make sure you can handle that distance.

Can also use the Shaker Landing ramp and we can meet up with you about 10 mins after putting in.  Need to be aware of the Shaker Village rules (need to sign a waiver) and how to get down to the landing off-hours.  That ramp is sometimes very muddy.

Shaker Village offers riverboat cruises to view the rookery for $50 on the first 3 Saturdays in May, and a dinner cruise for $70 on June 1.

Great pics by all. Glad I didn't take any with my point and click, they would have looked pale in comparison.

Wonderful day on a cooperative river and a chance to meet many other area paddlers.

Wow! Great pictures Tina! Thanks for sharing! What were you using to get such great pics of the nests and herons?

Thank you, Diane. I have a Canon 7D with a[masked] zoom. If you want to see photos of my 3 trips to the rookery, beginning on April 15, here is a link to all the photos. http://bit.ly/13cLF3e

Any thoughts about a Perception Carolina[masked] model in good condition? Price?

Great paddle, great time. The heronry is a sight and sound to behold, my thanks to the organizers.

Good trip, first for a lot of the group. Side trip up the Dix for an extra 5 miles was good.

Will we need gear other than boat, paddle, PFD, hat, food and water?

Some suggestions....sunscreen, sunglasses, binoculars (in a dry bag with your car keys), camera. Clothing....going to start out a little cool, some light fleece and/or a base layer might be handy. Layers you can peel are always good. NO COTTON anywhere. Wet cotton will just keep you cold.

I'm brand new to the group. Someone recommended that I check it out after I complained that my kayak hasn't seen the water this spring because I got rid of my SUV that I used to haul it. I'd love to join you, but my kayak needs a ride. How does that work?

That may be a tough location. Only a couple of members I know of are from that area, and they are not real active in the group. Also, not on the way to any of our meetups for most people. That's the other issue, this meetup is so new, we haven't met a lot of the members ourselves.

Sid send me your phone number and we'll see if we can work something out.

It's been a couple of weeks since I've there so will be interested in seeing the changes. I visited a rookery in Southern Indiana on private property and had to hike a couple of miles, wade through head high weeds (many with brambles, mud, spray myself with deet against the many ticks, and wash off poisonous ivy. We are lucky to have a rookery to easily viewed!

Since this is our first big meetup, I'm going to try to be at the put-in at 9:30. I have already met 8 out of the 14 of you and know you don't need any help or instruction, but will be available.

In most of the paddling meetup groups, the meetup time is usually the time we like to launch - usually takes 10-15 minutes to get gear and boats ready - we haven't really set any precedent in this group yet. At least try to get there by 10. I suspect we'll all be off by 10:15. If a little late, you should be able to catch us.

So far, everything looks good for the trip. River level is still dropping as long as we don't get a lot of rain today. Forecast looks cool but that is good (be prepared for a chance of showers). If you haven't been to the High Bridge area before, you may want to take the short side trip over to High Bridge Park either before or after - they have an overlook platform right by the pavilion you can look out over the river valley (where the bottom picture was taken).

Driving directions from Lex are pretty simple. South on Harrodsburg Rd. Right after it goes down to two lanes, veer left on Ky 29 at the flashing lights towards Wilmore. Go straight through Wilmore all the way to High Bridge. Right before going under the High Bridge itself, turn right on Lock 7 Rd to get down to the put-in. The park is right on the other side of the bridge.

Where exactly is put in point? And are we going back to where vehicals are at? Our is there a shuttle

    May 11, 2013

    • Don P.

If you click on the location above, it should bring up a Google Map, and the turn in to the put-in ramp is right on the target. Yes, and out and back, no shuttle.

is it possible to get to the rookery on foot?

    May 11, 2013

    • Don P.

Doubt it. I think its on the shooting club's property, but not positive, and its protected by a palisade, so I think that's why they've selected that location.
