Heart of the Kentucky River Palisades

View about the best, highest, most concentrated collection of palisades of any section of the Kentucky River. Includes Candlestick Rock (bottom pic), Swallow Rock, and Golden Gate which were landmarks back in the steamboat days and beyond. Can see the supports for the old Wernwag two-laned covered bridge near the beginning, near the old steel bridge (top pic). Will paddle through Tom Dorman State Nature Preserve.

For the ambitious, can tour the whole section, about 6 miles, so a long 12-mile out and back trip. Candlestick Rock is 4 miles in, so hopefully can get another group interested in turning back there for a moderate 8 mile trip. There are a couple of rock bars you can stop and get out on - one big one about the two mile mark, one at about the three - assuming the water level is not too high.

Ramp had a $3 launch fee for canoes and kayaks the last time I was there - an honor box so have correct change.

Looked at the ramp today. Its been scraped. River has a little flow still in it. Looking at the forecast, looks like good chance of rain Sunday morning. Since I want to get out and paddle, I'm playing the odds and will schedule the same Meetup for Saturday. Will leave this one here in case anyone wants to chance it.

don, are you going today saturday?

i was thinking our "rivers down!" is like others "surfs up!" I was on marble creek today, the KY river was still rushing by. I am sure its fine at 12 feet, but i have not yet gauged kayaking when the river is any higher. Saturday is better for me as i have to start driving to massachusettes to get my college kid sunday afternoon. but i didnt load up my kayak, and would have to drive to the farm to get it. so can i say I'm tentative for Saturday if river is down, not raining and i can get my kayak?

It's all going to depend on the weather for either Saturday or Sunday as to whether I attend or not. I'll put the kayak on the car tonight in hopes that the rain will hold off.

Have to spend the weekend house hunting.

I've got to switch to the uncommitted list for this paddle. It appears that we have suddenly sold our house so I'm going to be doing some serious house hunting this weekend.

River is falling nicely, and the rain looks like it will hold off a few days, so it should be at a level by Sunday that is OK for an out and back paddle. I can go check the ramp on Saturday to see what it looks like. If its not clean, there may still be another option or two for a river paddle.

Looks like a cool day with potential rain now, though. Air temps and water temps in the 50s, so have gear that you can fend off hypothermia.

There is a good chance we'll have to cancel this trip. The river is on the rise again, and even if it falls back down, there may be a muddy mess on the ramp. Will make the call on Saturday, if not sooner.

Want to have a backup plan for an area lake? I'm familiar with Taylorsville and Cedar Creek lakes, but there are a few others.

Did Cedar Creek Lake today. The Middle Ramp parking area was about 3/4 full, the Lower Ramp parking area looked pretty full, the Upper Ramp didn't have too many trucks/trailers. Paddled the perimeter of the whole lake (11.6 miles). Never got out of sight of people in power boats - sometimes I could easily see 10-15 boats. Can't imagine what a weekend is like.

I also paddled cedar creek today. Had a great day. A lot of turtle watching.

Hate to cancel out on this but I need to be closer to home for many reasons...hope to be able to do this at some point. Have fun!

I'll probably have to wait until the next trip when I have all my gear assembled.

I would like to do the longer trip...I guess depends on the current that day as well!

went to look at the river @ High Bridge today. There's a new sign posted at the boat ramp there, stating that there's no longer a fee to launch from there. It would be nice if they did the same for the camp nelson ramp.
