Kentucky and Dix River Paddle

Paddle past Shaker Landing, under High Bridge, take a right on the Dix River. Paddle about 2.5 miles up the Dix until you come to where the pool of the Kentucky River runs out and there is a small rapid (picture). Can portage around the rapid to another pool that goes up to the Dix Dam that makes Herrington Lake, or just hike around and eat a snack. Very scenic. Lots of palisades, a waterfall.  Total distance, around 7 miles.  Can extend that by going up the Kentucky River some.

Best when the Kentucky River gauge at Lock 7 is 11 ft. or less, and the Dix River at Dix Dam is less than 500 cfs. They seem to either release about 300cfs or around 1200cfs. Anything higher on the gauge just means the Kentucky is backing up in the Dix higher. You can still make it part way up at 1200cfs, but eventually, the current is as fast as you can paddle. If you catch it just right, you can make it up in the morning at 300cfs, and they'll release starting around 11 or 12 at 1200cfs and you get a really easy paddle back.

Can start from the High Bridge Ramp or Shaker Landing (need waiver and need to know how to get to Landing in off peak hours).

Good to see everybody but sorry I didn't get to paddle with you a while. Tried to get back in time but saw you leaving just as I hit the rocks. Not bad going thru but had to portage some.

Can't make it on Father's Day. I was on the Dix today and it was good but very busy with fishermen and paddlers.

Where's most starting from - Shaker or High Bridge ramp?

High Bridge. Closer to Lex and a better ramp usually.

River is falling quickly, should be low enough by Sun. Dix Dam didn't release today. Weather looks good. Only issue is its Father's Day.

For sure, but want to get an idea of when people are wanting to go. Would like to give several days notice at least for a Meetup. Anyone, don't hesitate to use the Discussions to try to set up a "day of" type trip. Much easier and quicker to set up than a full blown Meetup.

Can we make this a short-notice evening trip and just wait and watch the flow and rain forecast? Right now the Dix is certainly too high and fast, with more rain coming later this week. I think it's going to be awhile before it would be a comfortable paddle for all who might want to attend.

Interested in going out again. Need to make similar arrangements if possible. Will also need to wait for sun burn to heal; I think I had minor heat exhaustion last trip the last day. :(

Oops, didn't check the river level. May be too high this week.

Just say when, and I'll put a date/time on there. Can copy and make more too. This is one of the most popular trips. I think it has the Goldilocks effect. Just the right driving distance, paddling distance, scenery, ramp accessibility for most folks. Just looking at the weather, Friday evening or Saturday look good this week. Or Tues, Wed. evening next.

I've paddled this about one month ago by myself. Will attend depending on date and time
