  • Sociable Traditional Games Evening

This event will be a "first",  subject to a guaranteed number of attendees on the night. The Venue is The Gunmakers Arms, 93 Bath St, City Centre, Birmingham B4 6HG. Parking is available in the street outside, but public transport to the city centre is ideal.

Tonight we will concentrate on Bridge, Backgammon, Mancala, Black Widow, Othello and Yahtzee.

Priority will be given to forming 2 tables for Bridge, or failing that, 1 table for Bridge. Otherwise we will split ourselves across the other games. Tuition for Bridge cannot reasonably provided on the night in the time available, so players should already know the rules and bidding basics. But the rules and tactics of the other games can be taught within 15 minutes, and can be enjoyed on the night, although the games take rather longer to master - so everyone can join in.

    1. Bridge

If we have at least 2 tables of 4 people, where we can employ a team-scoring duplicate approach. This game is aimed at those already who already play (level of experience does not matter). We will bring several decks with game-trays and the green baize cloths.

    2. Backgammon

There have already been a number of Backgammon meetup events, and we have a few practiced players. We will bring multiple backgammon sets, which will be ample to engage everyone.

    3. Mancala

Mancala, and it's variations such as Oware form the backbone of traditional games in West Africa. Again easy to teach, and to enjoy on the night, but rather longer to master. We have 1 deluxe set which will take either 2 or 4 players.

    4. Black Widow (or Black Maria)

    Traditional game for 3-5 players

    5. Othello

    Traditional game for 2 players

    6 Yahtzee

    Traditional game for 3-5 players

    Attendance Assurance:

Please indicate in the comments below which games you already know, and which games you would need tuition for. We will aim to provide tuition for those who answer honesty and fully. But we need to be fully aware of numbers in advance. Please also make a clear note in your diaries, so that everyone attends, thanks.

On this occasion we are requesting that other games are not played on the night, although if we hold a follow-up event, we will probably increase the variety of games available

    Minimum attendance 8 players.

This event is being run by JQ&E games for GO:Heart Of England and the Board & Card Game Enthusiasts (Birmingham)
