• Gamers @ Dockers
Gamers@Dockers meet up every Thursday at the Good Games store. Gamers@Dockers welcomes anybody who wants to have a fun night playing some modern, mostly strategic, board games. There are no rules around what we play, however you are more likely to stumble across us playing Eurogames than anything else (see below for details). Gamers@Dockers was born in 2004 and has continued as a weekly event ever since. In 2013 it relocated from its historical place of residence in the Docklands. The name may no longer make sense, but it’s part of the charm. When should I get there? Dockers starts around 6 pm (with most people, like me, arriving by 6:30 pm) and continues until Good Games closes (somewhere between 10:00 – 11:00 pm). We typically allow plenty of time for people to arrive and play short 5 to 30 minute games until around 6:30-7:00pm when we aim to kick off the longer games. If you think you will arrive later than 7:00pm it helps to let us know to avoid missing out. Just look for the people with board games in front of them and there's a fair chance its Gamers@Dockers (sometimes we actually remember and put out a sign - especially if you let us know you are coming). Good Games is open much earlier than 6 pm if you want to arrive early and make a day of it. Games we play... As I said, we mostly play Eurogames. • What does that mean? Try this https://www.meetup.com/Boardgames-group-party-and-strategy-games/pages/2954162/Euro_Games__What_are_they_/. • Still not sure, well lately we have been playing games such as Terraforming Mars, Concordia, Century Spice Road, Le Havre, Jump Drive and Lisboa. Check them out online. We tend to be a fairly experienced bunch of gamers and there are so many new games coming out all the time that we tend to not play many of the beginner or gateway games such as: Ticket To Ride, Settlers of Catan, or Carcassone. However, almost every week we are trying out a new game, so we are willing to teach games and we are more than happy to have new players along to learn how to play with us. Who knows what awesome new game you haven't tried yet. Parking and Other Useful Information • Street parking available, however it is metered until at least 7:30pm (approx. $5.50 per hour) and the meters are only 1 hour meters. • There are multi storey car parks close by with all night parking for around $9 from 5pm ($6.50 if booked online). • There are snack foods, ice creams and drinks sold in the store (at pretty reasonable prices). • Please respect that this is a place of business, however there are plenty of friendly gamers in here either as part of Dockers or as part of Good Games regular customers.

  • Cardboard City Games Club
Come one, come all! Join a broad mix of friendly folk for a spot of socialising and strategising with some of the best modern strategy board games around. Enjoy a meal and a relaxing beverage. There are no fees! And beginners are very, very welcome. Cardboard City Games Club welcomes anyone who wants to have good fun with good people and great board games. You won't see Risk, Monopoly, Scrabble or Hungry Hungry Hippos - try Cafe Games for those! But, you will find Catan, Agricola, Carcassonne, Dominion, Puerto Rico, Power Grid, and much, much more. Bring along your favourite game(s), grab one from our extensive library, or just join a table and learn a new one whilst making some new friends. I'm new here, what should I do? Never heard of these games? Not been before? No problem! Our friendly local gamers are happy to teach and make newcomers feel very welcome. We have several new players each week, and many of these games are very easy to pick up and learn. You'll be having fun in no time! What are these modern board games we play? Many of these games are "Eurogames". These are board games that emphasise strategy, play down luck, often lean towards economic and historical themes, and usually wrap up in about an hour or two. A hallmark of these games is that you don't need to eliminate the other players to win and you get to do interesting stuff even when it's not your turn. Other games tend to focus more of theme / story, often with a lot more luck in theme. Some people call these "Ameritrash". But we don't resort to name-calling here - all modern strategy games are welcome! You name it, it has been made into a board game! You might find yourself in a fast-paced auction bidding for stocks in an American railway company, building a power grid across China, forging a galactic empire, attracting great thinkers to your palace in Renaissance Italy, ploughing a field in 17th century Germany, hammering out a trade deal as you settle the island of Catan, saving the world from global warming, defending your dynasty in ancient Mesopotamia, running a Japanese sushi bar, co-operating to manage a deadly pandemic, rigging elections in revolutionary France, setting up a wine business in Portugal... and so much more!!! I don’t have any modern games, can I still play? Of course! There are always plenty of games to play! The club also maintains a large library of classic easy-to-learn games for anyone to make use of on the night, and you'll easily find someone keen to teach (or you can even teach yourself, if you'd prefer !) For those that own their own games, we heartily encourage you to bring your own games along to play and teach too, of course. Games you won't see. Whilst we have plenty of good chatter over our games, we don't permit loud party games (it can get too noisy). We also don't do role-playing games either - we recommend the Gamezilla meetup in the city for people keen to try those. So what is in this "Games Library" you mentioned? We have over 50 games, all picked to be mostly newcomer friendly, top-rated, and easy to pick and learn on the night. The library contents are tracked on our BoardGameGeek profile here: https://boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/CardboardCity (https://boardgamegeek.com/user/EurogamesMelbourne) Who runs this? With the help of our longer standing members, the club is run by Ben. Ben's dirty secret is he mainly owns thematic 'Amerithrash' games, but some how has attends a mostly 'Eurogames' club, which puzzles and amuses him. He's also from England and a rather nice chap - if you're not sure what to do on the night, ask Ben! Where do I find out more about modern board games? • Hawthorn - Cafe Games: Strategy Games/Party/Anything Session
All kinds of games welcome at this session - light party or heavy euro strategy! Note the starting time of 4pm Newcomers are encouraged to start with the earlier session - the "Social Games" Meetup event, but if you can’t make that, this session will still be welcoming. The restaurant will also be serving food from 5-9 with drinks available. All sorts of games are welcome at this session, including but not limited to: • traditional games such as chess, draughts and mahjong • modern strategy games such as Powergrid, Arkham Horror, Pandemic, 7 Wonders • party games like Dixit, Pictionary, Articulate ... Yes I will be bringing along *some* games, but this sort of event works best when everyone helps out. Entry: free Pay: for food, drink as you go. (This is a restaurant, not your mate's garage, so I should not need to spell out that it's inappropriate to bring your own food and drink) Children: This event is for adult socialisation, please do not bring your children. Photos and videos from previous Cafe Games events can be found on our website http://cafegames.wordpress.com (http://cafegames.wordpress.com/)

  • Hawthorn - Cafe Games: Party & Social Games Session
Yes, this is a dedicated session for all kinds of party and social games! No euros or strategy games (until 4). More of a social club than a strategy session! The restaurant menu is available from the bar and drinks too! "Eat, drink and be merry!" If you’re new, I highly recommend you start during this session, so you get to meet a variety of people, in some lighter games, before getting into the long strategic games of the later session. We’re looking for • Party games, like Dixit, Pictionary, Telestrations, Taboo, Cranium, Reverse Charades, Billionaire, Perpetual Commotion, Articulate, Anomia, Cards Against Humanity etc • Word games, like Scrabble, Scattergories, Boggle • Tile games, like Qwirkle, Rummikub, Dominos, • Card games, like Uno, 500, Bridge, Canasta • Dexterity games, like Jenga, Crokinole, Bausack and Foosball • and of course the Psychological/Negotiation games like Werewolf (Mafia), The Resistance, Bohnanza If you've never played these games before, we're more than happy to show you how. :-) You’ll notice that after 4pm the latter half of this session overlaps with the “All Games” event. You’re welcome to stay on and continue to play lighter games or even try some more strategic games. ( In case you’re wondering, ruling is, Munchkin is strategy. ) Yes I will be bringing along *some* games, but this sort of event works best when everyone helps out. Entry: free Pay: for food, drink as you go. (This is a restaurant, not your mate's garage, so I should not need to spell out that it's inappropriate to bring your own food and drink) Children: This event is for adult socialisation, please do not bring your children.
