  • Getting Comfortable with Ethereum's Solidity

    Clearwater Building Downtown

For our next session we'll start digging in to smart contracts! This meetup will start to explore the possibilities of what you can do with the Ethereum virtual machine. We'll cover the Solidity language and features and demonstrate how you can experiment by creating and debugging your own smart contracts. The language components we'll cover are: - Literal and value types - Complex types such as dynamic arrays and mappings - The special address type - Ether and time units - Special global variables: msg, block, tx and now - Error handling - Cleaning up and destroying a contract - Making sense of error messages After we have a good handle on the language I'll walk through a couple example contracts together. If we have time we may introduce some best-practices and security concerns or write a contract together as a group. During the meetup we will be using the tool Remix. It's a browser-based IDE so all you'll need is any computer that can run a modern browser. You can find it at https://remix.ethereum.org/ I feel that anyone with basic programming experience can pick up Solidity fairly easily. Please consult your financial planner before attempting to invest in the cryptospace. Please consult your local authorities to ensure participating in the cryptospace is legal in your jurisdiction. -- WHAT -- NEW MEETUP! FOCUSED ON DEVELOPMENT AND BUILDING. Hi blockchainers! If you would like to join up with other developers in the valley that would like to starting sinking in and cutting your teeth on blockchain development then consider joining us at our new monthly meeting! At our first meeting I'll be giving a short talk, "Dapp Architecture: From Concept to Ground Zero." I'll cover what blockchains can and can't do, where the bridges between chains and legacy tech such as your web browser and centralized databases come into play, and the future technology that could make some of these bridges obsolete. You should have some background with software but not necessarily a lot. Developing for blockchains is a new beast and a new development environment with its own tools. But smart-contract code still needs to communicate with the user somehow. If you're a mobile, web, or even iot developer, your skills are still needed in blockchain projects. If you're a writer or educator then you're desperately needed too to help communicate the importance of this technology and these projects to the public. At every session we'll discuss upcoming topics and vote on the one for our next meeting. These sessions will be a collaborative space where together we can dig into tangents, do demos, compare notes, learn new techniques and brainstorm. I hope this world-changing technology excites you with it's possibilities because they're limitless! Join us and no matter where you're at now we can help you get to the next level! Our first meeting will be at 6pm on February 21st in our usual room in the Clearwater building. I'm looking forward to seeing you there!
