Women's Travel Book Club

Online event

Hello there!

Join us for a book club discussion of When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago.

Here's more about the book:

Esmeralda Santiago's story begins in rural Puerto Rico, where her childhood was full of both tenderness and domestic strife, tropical sounds and sights as well as poverty. Growing up, she learned the proper way to eat a guava, the sound of tree frogs in the mango groves at night, the taste of the delectable sausage called morcilla, and the formula for ushering a dead baby's soul to heaven.

As she enters school we see the clash, both hilarious and fierce, of Puerto Rican and Yankee culture. When her mother, Mami, a force of nature, takes off to New York with her seven, soon to be eleven children, Esmeralda, the oldest, must learn new rules, a new language, and eventually take on a new identity.

In this first volume of her much-praised, bestselling trilogy, Santiago brilliantly recreates the idyllic landscape and tumultuous family life of her earliest years and her tremendous journey from the barrio to Brooklyn, from translating for her mother at the welfare office to high honors at Harvard.

How our Travel Book Club works:

We meet online via Zoom to chat about our monthly book pick. I have a list of discussion questions for our group, and you can bring your own questions and comments too if you have some.

The books we read are by women about travel or different cultures.

Grab your drink of choice and join us for an hour to talk story and travel.

You do NOT need to speak Italian to take this class. But if you do, you can practice a bit with Pina!

We will send you an ingredient list once you have signed up for the class.

You will be cooking the meal in your kitchen, so please ensure you have the basic cooking supplies, such as pots, pans, etc. If you have any concerns about what you will need to cook the meal, please email [masked]

You will need a WiFi connection and a computer, smartphone, or tablet with video and audio capabilities that can access the Zoom app. Additionally, make sure that you are able to move the device around your kitchen as needed for the class.

If you don't feel like cooking with us, then you can just watch and cook later, but it is fun to cook along with Pina.

A Note from Your Teacher, Pina di Rosa:

Ciao! I was born in the south of Italy, in Naples, but I lived many years in Brescia, in the north. I earned my degree in nursing and I practiced for over 25 years in the fields of psychiatry and psychology.

My passion for the study of humanities lead me back to school where I graduated from the Università Degli Studi di Pavia with high honors in Italian Language and Literature, with a thesis of Latin Paleography on the handwriting of the poet Giacomo Leopardi. I have earned the DITALS (Certificate of proficiency in teaching Italian as a second language).

I love music. I am a singer and guitarist. I play in different venues in and around Portland, Oregon. I have published two CDs of my Italian music. I’ve always had many compliments on my cooking skills, so I teach Italian cooking in classes for children and adults. I am a world traveler, and once during a trip to Turkey, I met my husband, an American, and that was how I ended up here in Portland.
