February Book Club Meeting:Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez

Thanks to all of you who e-mailed me and suggested that we read "Love in the Time of Cholera" as our February selection since it tied with "Cloud Atlas" and obviously has a lot of support! Again, please feel free to come to whichever meetings you're most passionate about and we'll definitely do another open vote for the March book so feel free to throw out additional book suggestions in the "Suggestions for Next Book" Discussion page (http://www.meetup.com/Book-Club-for-Heartbreaking-Geniuses-and-Those-Who-Love-Them/messages/boards/thread/28453322)

I'm not a finance guy, but do read the WSJ and the FT fairly often - and low and behold, I ran across another review of "Love in the Time of Algorithms" which seems to be getting a lot of reviews and airtime (or newspaper/print time). Here is an article - and I know, it is not "Love in the time of Cholera" but it is obviously a play on words, and the same subject, haha - from today's Financial Times:

BTW, I really liked this retort (yes...this is me finally reading the article two weeks later...): "In the late 1970s, Jeffrey Ullman founded Great Expectations, which invited people to record videos of themselves for perusal by potential dates. When Mr. Ullman appeared on the Montel Williams talk show and was asked if he was preying on lonely people, he shot back: "Yes. Just like restaurants prey on the hungry and doctors prey on the sick and talk-show hosts prey on the people who are too bored to read a book.""

Of no particular relevance, except that it's coincidentally germane to today's discussion: Salon.com just posted an article about how movies don't portray marriage often or well. http://www.salon.com/2013/02/03/hollywood_hates_marriage/

    See y'all next month!

A friend just called and might have Celtic tickets.. Game starts at 1pm Sunday. Any idea how long the book club discussion will go?

typically ~1.5 - 2 hours depending on how long people choose to stay but you are obviously free to leave at any time and hope you can make both events!

Was reading the Wall Street Journal today and ran across this article, about online dating and a book titled, "Love in the time of algorithms." Ha! Would never have really given the article a moments notice were it not for the book we are all reading for this month's selection. So, just thought I'd share it with everyone. Here's the link:

This middle eastern cafe is adorable and a great place for a large group to meet....at least I think it will be! Let's give it a go for the February meeting at least and then go from there. They have a pretty good menu and I for one am planning on eating breakfast during the meeting. The early time is scheduled to avoid their afternoon rush and ensure seating, I'll call ahead and reserve seating on the downstairs couches. Please bring cash to help settle out the bill more efficiently. You can check them out here: http://www.andalacafe.com/home.php
