Curiously discussing The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

As many could not attend yesterday, we have rescheduled this Meetup!

For our April meeting, our dear Danielle picked "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" by Mark Haddon.

Here are the Discussion Points:

1. What overall feeling did you receive from reading, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.”  Happiness?  Relief?  Sadness?  Surprise?  Unassured?  Pity?  Educated?  Shame?  Understanding?  Compassion?

2. How do the illustrations help the reader understand Christopher’s thoughts? What did you find funny about the novel?  Do those same events bring about a different kind of feeling?

3. Why is honesty important to Christopher?  Why does Christopher feel like he cannot trust his father after his dishonesty?  What is Christopher’s reason for not trusting Mrs. Alexander?  Is his rationality towards trust reasonable?

4. Christopher acknowledges some of the things he believes are not logical, but he does this to make the world easier to cope with.  Why does he feel like he needs to limit his choices in decision making?

5. Christopher claims he does not understand why humans make decisions using their emotions.  How would the human race be if everyone made decisions based on logic?

6. Christopher has a difficult time understanding peoples’ feelings.  This lack of ability has consequences.  What are those consequences, and how does this affect how people communicate and react to him?  Mr. Jeavons?  Siobhan?  Mr Shears?  Mrs. Alexander?  Who understands Christopher the most?

7. Do you think Christopher’s mother and father are justifiable with their actions?  Do you think they really understand Christopher’s actions and thought process?  How do you think you would be different or the same if you had a child like Christopher?

8. Do you think Christopher shows some acceptance of his parent’s affection?  Does Christopher have an attachment for people even though he may not think so?  Why does Christopher feel like he understands animals better than humans?

9. Christopher seems to enjoy being alone and dreams of a world where the human race dies except for “special people like me.”  Why kind of topics does the author insinuate about humanity through the character Christopher? How do you think Christopher’s future would be?

NOTE: We always meet in the separate room in the basement of Cafe Fåtöljen, turning right and around the corner as you come down the stairs!
