**We will be meeting online until further notice**
Books at Bars is a monthly book discussion held at a local bar. Selections are a mixture of classics, bestsellers and under-read gems chosen through polls or by the Organizer.
Here's how it works: you read the book selection for the month, you come to the meeting, maybe order a drink or food, and we talk about the book. The Organizer will prepare questions in advance. If you're looking for a place to have a drink and talk about your husband and/or kids, this might not be the right book club for you. If you miss talking about books and debating the merits of a certain technique, then you've come to the right place. Grab a chair and order a drink.
In the early 20th Century, the United States government concocted a plan to import hippopotamuses into the marshlands of Louisiana to be bred and slaughtered as an alternative meat source. This is true.
Other true things about hippos: they are savage, they are fast, and their jaws can snap a man in two.
This was a terrible plan.
Contained within this volume is an 1890s America that might have been: a bayou overrun by feral hippos and mercenary hippo wranglers from around the globe. It is the story of Winslow Houndstooth and his crew. It is the story of their fortunes. It is the story of his revenge.
A powerful study of the women's movement in the U.S. from abolitionist days to the present that demonstrates how it has always been hampered by the racist and classist biases of its leaders.
