We practice L'Arte D'Armizare (The Art of Bearing Arms), a historical European martial art. Our main sources of interpretation are the books (c.1410-1420) of Fiore dei Liberi, a fencing master from Friuli (thus the non-standard Italian spellings!).
Our students work on a combination (http://www.meetup.com/SSGBoston/pages/Level_1_Curriculum/) of longsword, abrazzare (grappling), daga (dagger/knife) and other weapon skills. These skills are drawn from direct translation from historical sources (http://www.meetup.com/SSGBoston/pages/Beginning_Resources_%28Written%29/), developed through multiple physical interpretations and tested at speed. Though we emphasize historical technique, our training sessions are a blend of warmup, interpretation, drill, and for men and women who've passed our safety standards, both focused and open sparring.
Thursday nights are generally for more experienced students, as we work through some different parts of Fiore's works. New students should take our beginners' class first, or contact our instructors for more information. We're happy to have visiting scholars from other programs come and play!
