What we'll do:

Come and learn genetics fundamentals with us! Starting on July 24 and for 8 weeks, BosLab will host a Learning Circle to enhance and expand online learning through lively discussions and group activities. All levels are welcome with opportunities to learn and teach, as we will tune each meeting to participants' needs and interests. This event is free but registration is required using the following form: https://learningcircles.p2pu.org/en/signup/boslab-1062/.

More details:

Learning Circles are free, facilitated study groups for learners who want to take online courses, together and in person. More information about Learning Circles can be found on the P2PU website: https://www.p2pu.org/en/. During this Learning Circle, we will study units 3 and 4, focused on Genetics, from the MIT/EdX course "Introduction to Biology - The Secret of Life" (https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-to-biology-the-secret-of-life-0). Participants will meet biweekly on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9 pm at BosLab (2400 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02140). They should also dedicate another 2-3 hours of personal work each week to study the online course.

Having completed units 1 and 2 of the EdX course is recommended but not required, and all levels of experience in biology are welcome. In the spirit of Learning Circles, we will organize group learning activities which will give opportunities for more advanced participants to help beginners and for everyone to improve their understanding of biology, in a friendly and low-pressure environment.

The first session will consist of an introduction to the Learning Circle, a discussion centered around participants' background and expectations, and activities to get started with learning genetics.

Schedule:

Wednesday 7/24: Introduction
Wednesday 7/31: Mendel
Wednesday 8/14: Rediscovery of Mendel and Advances by T.H. Morgan
Wednesday 8/28: Basics of Human Genetics
Wednesday 9/11: Biochemical Genetics

What to bring:

Please, bring a laptop if you have one.
