Explore the Cape on a Bike - Cape Cod Rail Trail

  • Jul 27, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

More detail to come, but basic we carpool down from Boston on early sun morning. We'll  rent the bikes down by south Dennis, and then start exploring the town, forest, coffee/ice cream/pastry shops, get a drink/take a nap on the beach and then head back to city before dark.

Update Please Read!

Carpool:

Phillip car: Brian, David, Mark – full (Got contact and recommend one pickup location)
Jimmy car: Ashley,
one space open from North Quincy (need Contact)
John Car: Chris, Julie, Thiele (Full) Got Contact, meeting at Dunkin Donuts right by the Clev Circle Station at 630am

Bao Car: Ashley, Annie

Amy can u contact Michelle to see you girls can ride from Cambridge together?

It is the rider’s initiative to contact the potential driver asap to get this settled by tomorrow!

And it is on all drivers to send me your contact (through meetup email on the profile page) so I can text my contact info to u, they will not be posted in public (and for contact, text only plz)

Bike Rental:

I checked out both Barbara and Dennis, Barbara got more bikes, is closer and offering a coupon (check & print link http://www.barbsbikeshop.com/pdf/coupon.pdf) and last of all damn cheap compare to boston rate,  so we are using that, we will park in the huge parking lot by the trail head, and then walk over to the shop (5 mins) where I have reserved about 30-40 bikes

Trail Info and Day Plan (more to come)

For more info on the trail, check this http://www.capecodbikeguide.com/railtrail.asp

Lastly, even though it is only 80 to 90 miles away from here, we can’t go 65 mph all the time and traffic is always HIGH on Sat, so please planned to leave early so you won’t be late (at least 2 hr ahead), we have a big group and we will be on a lock and set schedule at least for the 1stpart of the trip

Parking & Directions: CCRT starts at the S. Dennis trailhead parking area, conveniently located just minutes from Route 6 on Route 134. Get off at Exit 9A and head south on Route 134 past Patriots Square plaza and Cumberland Farms. About 1/2 mile down from the exit you'll see a sign and parking lot on the left - turn here for the trail entrance.

My number is[masked], if something comes up and people need to reach me. I'll have some bike tools with me.

Hope everyone now is staying cool in air-condition places or in a pool with a cover (it really helps reading my phone too).

Since we are just 7 days away, I want to do a basic ride count to ensure we can all get there:

    Phillip car: Brian, David, Mark
Jimmy car: Ashley, a space open (david, if u still need a ride contact Jimmy given u both from north quincy )
Vay Car: June Mao, Yi Yang
John Car: me+1 from brookline, Hira potentially

Is everyone else driving? Given the traffic and parking logistic, I highly recommend ppl carpool where possible, let's keep each other updated

Carpool drivers, please send me ur digits for contact

    July 20, 2013

    • Kalina

I can give a ride to someone who doesn't have a bike and live in Braintree.

      July 23, 2013

Chris/John please give my spot to someone else. I will hopefully get to bike with this group some other time. You all have a great time.

      July 24, 2013

Hi, is there anyone living in Allston/Kenmore that's driving? I need a ride for 2 near this area~!

    July 23, 2013

    • Chris

Ashley, both Va Thong and Bao are offèring rides, either one can take 2 I think, please contact them and let me know..(doNt worry abt ur guest, u can pack her in the trunk lol)

Hello, It'll be my first visit to the Cape!! So excited!! Is there free parking??

    July 23, 2013

    • Irene

Oh.. I just called. They have a parking lot:)

      July 23, 2013

  • Chris

John, u make a good point, my thinking / recommendation is all carpool drivers do NOT go around picking up people, driver should pick One location where it's the responsibility of the riders to gather / show up on time. The drive is 2hrs, we need all the time we can save. Regarding pushing time back, I am definitely no fan of early sat wake up, But the traffic after 8/9am become siginificant, just too risky to leave late.

@Michelle, rental info can be found in previous comments of this thread. Any more questions, just ask... :)

      July 23, 2013

  • John

Chris, do you think we should push back the meeting time a bit? It's going to be 2, 2.5 hours to get there from Boston. Which means people need to leave from Boston by 6:30. It's going to be extra-painful for those of us who need to drive around picking people up.

    July 23, 2013

  • Steve

Remember to mention where you are coming from (city and/or T stops). Makes car pool planning much easier.

    July 23, 2013

Based on the fun bike ride we just had, and this one will take twice as long, am changing the day to Sat so everyone get a free day before Mon

@Rachel, the CCRT is paved, and most road bikes should be fine--so no worries! :) The only concern is for those with the ultra-skinny racing tires--BTDT, ouch... :| There could be windblown sand in certain spots which could render those tires with minimal traction compromising maneuverability--just have to be aware and ride with extra caution if you've those types of tires.

where in RI? I was thinking of heading down there Friday and driving over from Portsmouth sat morning, but it would be tough to coordinate a carpool unless you have a way to get back afterwards, since I'll be driving back to Boston.

      July 21, 2013

  • Amy L.

Does anyone know where exactly we are going? I can meet everyone there if no one else leaves from RI, and we are going to meet there at 9am right? Thanks!!

So can we drive down there and rent the car in Cape Code? Does anyone leave from Providence, Rhode Island, I can drive ppl there!

I have a car with a bike rack. I can give rides to people who are bringing their own bicycle and are located West or South of Boston.

    July 15, 2013

    • Chris

In Brookline, I think we r pretty close...that is viable alternative but separate me and bike add another variable

      July 15, 2013

    • Hira

If I can go which I will know early next week, it will be great to have my bike on your car if it has enough room (sounds like at least 3). Unless someone else makes a reservation with you sooner.

      July 18, 2013

  • Hira

I wouldn't know for sure until early next week if I could go or not. I would love to. So, be patient with me. If someone who is more sure falls into waiting list or so I will be happy to have them take over my spot.

This sounds like fun! I think there's a good chance I'll be able to go. If so, I'd drive down around 7 and I can provide a ride to anyone in the Somerville/Davis/Tufts area. I may want to head back before/around dinner-time.

hi there, out of curiousity, roughly how long is the bike trail - time wise? since we'll already be in the cape, are there any nice beaches along the way of the trail or after in which we can dunk or swim in? thanks! :]

    July 15, 2013

    • t

Biking the entire length of the CCRT is about two hours each way non-stop.

Coast Guard Beach and Nauset Beach (part of the Cape Cod National Seashore) are not directly on the CCRT, but can be readily accessed via a slight detour on local roads to the Salt Pond Visitor Center, and then a short ride on the Nauset Bike Path. FYI:

      https://mapsengine.goo...

However, Chris and others may have other beaches in mind... :)
