  • Decred's Jake Yocom-Piatt: Cutting the Head off the Snake

    Location visible to members

Our presenter in April will be Jake Yocom-Piatt (far left), team lead at Decred, a cryptocurrency based on a the btcd client of Bitcoin and a whitepaper titled “Memcoin2: a hybrid proof-of-work, proof-of-stake-based cryptocurrency.” Unlike other altcoins, Decred has made substantial tweaks to the original bitcoin code to “right the ship,” as Jake says. A core operating principle of Decred is that having any type of central point of control or influence goes against what a decentralized cryptocurrency is all about. In other words, everyone should be able contribute to the future direction of the project and no core entity or group should have undue influence. Jake will be talking about how a hybrid consensus system gives voice to the coin holders of the system. He will also talk about how Decred is planning to turn its development funds into a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) thus handing over a current value of $28 million in funds to the stakeholders themselves. This technical presentation will include an abridged summary of bitcoin, a deep dive into hybrid PoW/PoS, gamification of timestamping, open governance and what it takes to create a stakeholder-driven DAO. • Ari Juels: Bug Bounties and Exploit-Resistant Smart Contracts

The full title of this presentation is actually "Enter the Hydra: Towards Principled Bug Bounties and Exploit-Resistant Smart Contracts." Our presenter will be Ari Juels, professor at (Jacobs Technion) Cornell Tech and co-director at Initiative for CryptoCurrencies and Contracts (IC3). ABSTRACT Vulnerability reward programs, a.k.a. "bug bounties," are a near-universal component of major software security programs. Today, such programs have three major deficiencies: They fail to provide strong technical (or other) assurances of fair payment for reported bugs, they lack rigorous principles for setting bounty amounts, and they can only effectively incentivize economically rational hackers to disclose bugs by offering rich bounties. As a result, rather than reporting bugs, hackers often choose to sell or weaponize them. We offer a novel, principled approach to administering and reasoning about bug bounties that cost-effectively boosts incentives for hackers to report bugs. Our key idea is a concept that we call an “exploit gap.” This is a transformation of program code that prevents a serious bug from being exploited as a security-critical vulnerability. We focus on a broadly applicable realization through a variant of the classic idea of N-version programming. We call the result a “hydra program.” As our main target application, we explore smart contracts, programs that execute on blockchains. Because smart contracts are often financial instruments, they offer a springboard for our rigorous framework to reason about bounty price setting. By modeling an economically rational hacker's bug-exploitation, we show how hydra contracts greatly amplify the power of bounties to financially incentivize disclosure. We also show how smart contracts can separately enforce “fairness” for bug bounties, guaranteeing payment for correctly reported bugs. We present a survey of well-known exploits to-date against Ethereum smart contracts, showing that multi-language hydra programming would have abated most of them. We also report on implementation of hydra Ethereum contracts. • Rob Viglione: SPECTRE as a Distributed Ledger Scaling Solution

    Location visible to members

Rob Viglione, co-founder of ZenCash, a zero-knowledge-based cryptocurrency and secure messaging service, will be talking to us about SPECTRE, a novel implementation of the directed acyclic graph (DAG) protocol. (Say that five times fast.) One of the big dilemmas in blockchain today is how to scale the protocol. Several scaling proposals have been put forth, including Lightning. A more controversial proposal is SPECTRE, put together by a group of researchers in Israel. SPECTRE is a DAG-based protocol for a permissionless distributed ledger that promises high throughput and fast confirmation times while maintaining the same high level of security as Bitcoin. Existing non-SPECTRE implementations of DAG include IOTA, Hashgraph and Byteball. Rob will touch on existing scaling solutions. After that, he will go on to explain how SPECTRE works, how it differs from other DAG-based architectures, and why it may be a promising way to scale blockchains. Why is Rob talking about SPECTRE? How does he know so much? Because ZenCash recently entered into a partnership with IOHK, the blockchain research and engineering company led by Charles Hoskinson, who is also an advisor to ZenCash. Part of that partnership involves ZenCash implementing a treasury system designed by IOHK researchers at the University of Edinburgh. A second part involves ZenCash writing software for implementing SPECTRE. (IOHK is writing up the specifications and ZenCash will handle coding.) And, if all systems are go, ZenCash may even upgrade to the new protocol. • Charles Hoskinson: Third-Generation Blockchains

    Location visible to members

Charles Hoskinson, CEO at blockchain research and development company IOHK, will be talking about third-generation blockchains and cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin was the first generation blockchain; Ethereum was the second. Now we are entering a 3.0 phase, where features such as scalability, interoperability (side chains), treasury systems and on-chain governance play key roles. Hoskinson is a well-known figure in the blockchain space. One of the original founders and the initial CEO at Ethereum, he eventually went on to establish IOHK with Jeremy Wood, another Ethereum veteran. IOHK is distinguished by its close ties with academia. Among the company's more than 100 workers are researchers and developers located at universities across the globe. A special group at IOHK called "the Grothendieck Team" has several developers devoted to Ethereum Classic, a project that resulted from a split in the Ethereum blockchain after the DAO hack. But a larger portion of the company's efforts goes toward developing Cardano, a cryptocurrency and smart contract platform that launched in October. Written in Haskell, Cardano emphasizes peer review and formal methods as a way to produce high assurance software. Its core protocol is Ouroboros, a provably secure proof-of-stake algorithm for reaching consensus on the next block in the chain. Eventually, Cardano will compete with platforms like Ethereum and Tezos.
