[Chinatown, Boston] Lunar New Year: Dim Sum/Lion Dance- Cancelled due to snow

This meetup has been cancelled due to snow.

Come and celebrate Lunar New Year in Chinatown and enjoy yummy dim sum (Cantonese brunch style) at Hei La Moon Restaurant in Chinatown. 2013 is the year of the snake: People born in the year of the snake are considered to be powerful and ambitious. The restaurant have an extensive menu and their price is reasonable. Dim sum refers to a style of Chinese food prepared as small bite-sized or individual portions of food traditionally served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. The average individual cost for dim sum would be usually not more than $15-20 including gratuity.

We plan to meet in front of McDonalds, 702 Washington St., (corner of Stuart & Washington): a 5 min walk from Chinatown or Tufts Medical Center T stations (Orange Line) at 11:00am. At 11:15 am we will walk over to Hei La Moon for dim sum.

Please bring cash to make payments easier.

Our host, Betty, teaches Cantonese conversational classes of all levels in Sunday afternoons in her Newton office. Since Betty has to book several tables at the Restaurant, please keep up with your RSVP. Please sign-up only when you are sure to join in dim sum. After dim sum around 2 pm, we will walk around Chinatown to enjoy lion dance, firecrackers (watch out!), and some New Year street venders for a couple of hours. (This event was co-posted with two other meetup groups: Asian American and Boston Neighborhood Explore.- please RSVP with only one group). Parking spots will be extremely hard to find in and around Chinatown, so the use of T/Bus is recommended.

This was great fun! We had left Haverhill early and so were almost there when this was cancelled. Luckily, we were able to meet up with the others who still came (thanks Sho!) and join with the Asian American meet up group who was having a concurrent event.

Thanks Hsiu Chang. We had to cancel due to winter weather advisory - white-out situation in the morning for the safety of especially those who planned to drive. But the cancellation did not reach in time to some people - yet happy to hear all went well and enjoyed stormy Chinese New Year. Betty is planning for another dim sum for August moon festival when we do not need to worry about snow.

Even though event was officially cancelled, I showed up and met with about 20 people who were waiting, and we had a good time. The road was not that good, but I think everyone got there safely, we had a good time, and the dancing lions came into the restaurant to get red envelope from the patrons.

As we walk around we will see Lion Dance Troupe from different martial art school in Boston, going to different business to bring good luck and in return, receive gift. There will be firecrackers, even little kids will have big chain of red fire cracker to scare away the bad luck and evil spirit.

Yes, there will be a lion dance parade all afternoon.

    February 13, 2013

  • K

Is there still a parade too?

    February 13, 2013

  • Hsiu C.

Hi Betty, we should keep the RSVP open. I am happy to help out and lead a separate group to a different restaurant if Hei La Moon is overcrowded.
