Field Trip to Carabiner's in New Bedford

Carabiner's is supposed to be Huge! Let's check it out!
I'm flexible on time if anyone wants to suggest a different time. We can figure out carpooling too.

Hope you don't mind the photos. The best I could do considering the lighting was pretty bad, and my cell phone camera not the best thing to use.

Great meetup. Thank you Kristina for organizing, and Douglas for driving! Carabiner's has very high ceilings, and the routes under rated, so it was harder than I expected. It also could use more 5.8's and definitely more lighting. Otherwise a good place with very nice workers to help you out. Pour Farm Tavern was fun, too.

For carpooling, I can suggest meeting at my place in Charlestown at 1:00. I'm easy-on to 93S. I'm also open to meeting other places if more convenient. Also, do people want to go for a beer after our excursion?

For Frank, Aine, and Ken--let's plan to meet in parking lot closest to the sidewalk. I'm in a blue Mazda 3 hatchback. I know Aine's car and Ken will be walking from the T.

To save time, you can register over the internet here: http://www.carabiners.com/index.php/first-visit-n/30-online-registration/27-online-registration

In the rules, apparently one cannot use profanity. That will put a crimp on my style. :(

Thanks for the registration link, Ken. Are you frigging kidding me about that rule? :-)

I'm interested in going (and carpooling!) but I just looked on their site and they don't allow ATCs or other "tube-like" belay devices. They have grigris to use but I've never used one - will this be hard to pick up?

    December 19, 2012

    • Kristina

Hi Jane. Great catch! I've never used a Grigri either, but I'm confident will be easy to pick up. Here's a link to Petzl's tech description and video. The more instructional part starts at 3:46. The video is focused on lead climbing which requires paying out rope, but the video shows how the rope goes through the device and how to brake (same as ATC).

For everyone: Carabiner posts this in their FAQ section of their "First Visit" page: Q. Can I use an ATC or tube style belay device?

      A. Carabiner's in New Bedford does not allow ATC or other tube-style belay devices. GriGris are provided free of charge at every climbing station, and we have a remarkable safety record with this type of belay device. Professionals and amateurs alike can learn and use the GriGri quickly and safely.
