Updated 08/09 for 8/10 RIDE South Shore 70 miler Wompatuck Hingham, MA

This ride is replacing the KANC RIDE. We'll meet at Wompatuck State Park in Hingham at 7:30 am ride will leave at 8:00am. The average speed is 17-20 mph; please make sure you fuel up your body the day/night before to help prevent Bonking " have carbs".

UPDATE: For 1st timers and slower riders there will be another group riding same time; lead by my friend Deb. This will be a 35-40 mile loop going in the opposite direction " some of the same route" of the 70 miler. Hopefully this will work better for some of you.

This ride is not for 1st timers as it will move at a good clip and you would have to navigate the route on your own. The ride will go down some nice coastal roads and out on a few main roads; go through Hingham, Scituate, Marshfield, Humarock, Duxbury, Cohasset and Hull.

You will need to carry fuel for you body " Gu, Block or whatever you use" and 2 bottle with electrolytes and there is plenty of places to stop for more water.

Great weather, spirited riders, special route. More of those of you who are looking for riding opportunities, opportunities to meet other cyclists, missed a very special day riding the S Shore. Hope to see more of you at future events.

Hello Everett, we looked for you....

Joel and I just kept rolling. We ended up rolling all the way to Plymouth, got a bite to eat there and then returned to the park via Cohasset - we followed your route and added other detours along the way. 'Twas a perfect day to be out cycling - return headwinds notwithstanding. Thanks for hosting - we'll ride together again.

This was a great ride! We just need to remember to bring more spare tubes for those feisty south shore roads next time.

Jeff, fix your route links above. They work for you b/c you are logged in, but folks without MMR accounts cannot see the routes.

Could someone tell me where the parking lot is for this state park? The map I'm looking at as us starting from the middle of the park, but I don't see any evidence of a place to park ones car.

the only entrance is Union Street, just drive through the main entrance--you pass a defunct toll house--keep going until the area opens up and you see large parking lots on both the left and right. On the right is a building with restrooms--park next to the building in that lot. You should see a bunch of cars and bikes and folks milling around.

Drats--second question. Most of the ride looks like it's on the road, but there are a few places that it's hard to tell--are we all bringing road bikes?

Rob, this 100% all on the road, some short stretches on route 3A which is fast and a little hairy, which is what Jeff meant by 'not for 1st timers'. You wouldn't be able to keep up with the group on a hybrid, the pace is fast.

Might be nice to figure out a place where the two groups might meet, share the view, snack and then say "ride on", instead of just passing each other with a mere wave..... Any thoughts about apres-ride eats, drinks, swim?

Thank you. I just wanted to put it out there. Since this is a social event, I wanted folks to think about how we might leverage the opportunity of our getting together to actually get to know one another. Eric is right, there are indeed many possible rendezvous sites. Jeffery has suggested the light house - a fine option, among several. I'm sure our event host will cover planned rest stops, where we might rendezvous and any riding protocols we should observe to ensure both everyone's safety and the fun factor.

This is a nice ride - the rollers of the South Shore make for a nice rhythm alone or in a pace-line. Since we have time to plan, might we punch the start to 8 AM - for those of us who are 30+ miles away and may add on a remote/or not?

    July 11, 2013

    • Jeffrey

I made a change meeting at 7:30 ride leaves at 8:00; so that should help. J

Any chance you can tolerate a 15-18 mph pace? Is it relatively flat?

    July 11, 2013

    • Jeffrey

Yes, I think where going to break into 2 groups 1 slower group and 1 faster group

I am training for a century end of September. I'll try to keep up for as long as possible.
