Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup (by Hatch Shell)

Join thousands of volunteers from throughout the watershed for the 14th Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup! Every year the Cleanup engages over 3,000 volunteers to restore and maintain along the Charles River and its tributaries by picking up trash and cleaning the riverbanks at over 100 sites from Milford to Boston. Last year Boston Volunteers joined others in this event in removing a total 40 tons of trash!

Cleanup supplies, snacks, and a free t-shirt are all provided! All you need to bring is your smiling self and a bottle of water. Restrooms will be on site as well.

Following the Cleanup everyone is invited to a volunteer appreciation picnic at the Hatch Shell with music, games provided by Knucklebones, and other fun!

We'll be volunteering with the Esplanade Association in helping in the area around the Hatch Shell, where I'll have supplies and waiver sheets for everyone - meet me at the big registration table right in front of it (there'll be arrows and signage pointing to it - you won't miss it!):

Spots for the cleanup fill up very fast; the Esplanade Association already has 350 volunteers, and it often meets its volunteer maximum of 600 people well before March 14th. Do take public transport as there is no parking around the Hatch Shell (you might find some expensive one on the Boston side by Arlington/Copley, and cross over the foot bridge to the Hatch Shell.)

The 14th Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup is organized by: Charles River Watershed Association, The Esplanade Association, Department of Conservation and Recreation, Charles River Conservancy, Emerald Necklace Conservancy, Green Decade Newton, Senator Will Brownsberger's Office, and Waltham Land Trust.

My apologies for the late cancelation. I am having back problems and won´t be able to spend the morning walking around. I do hope that someone on the waiting list can take my place.

    Hi waiting list crew!

I don't have anymore spots at this Hatch Shell cleanup, but you are welcome to help out that same morning, same time, at the Somerville Spring Cleanup day at the Healey School, Somerville. You'll be working alongside the Somerville mayor and an environmental nonprofit in planting a school garden - and they are direly in need of volunteers.

Free breakfast, BBQ lunch, and t-shirt! Anyone can sign up:

I just signed up on here; when I went to the esplanade sit I couldn't find the event. I'm ok with not getting a t-shirt but do I need to find a way to sign up there for any other reason?

Hi Sarah, sorry had no notifications of this message, just seeing this! I'll have lots of waivers on site for everyone and their friends, feel free to just show up this Saturday at 9am at the table we have set up in front of the Hatch Shell, and we'll get you all signed up!

Hello, I just signed up today please let me know if that is ok, or if it is too late at this point. Thanks!

Hi Kate, not too late at all, you're all set! See you Saturday, will bring waivers that everyone can fill on site.

Hi all! Due to the current police activity in greater Boston, the Department of Conservation and Recreation is asking us to postpone our Earth Day Cleanup to Sat, Apr 27th. Same time, same place! Do update your RSVP if you will not be able to make it next week. I greatly apologize for the inconvenience and hope everyone is inside and safe. Will send out an email to our attendees as well.

    Hi Boston Volunteers!

After speaking to the Esplanade Association today, I've expanded our attendee limit; we might not have t-shirts for those that are getting to sign up after April 15th (though we almost always have some left over) so if you don't mind that, feel free to sign on for the event! : )

    April 16, 2013

  • Imanuela C.

The Esplanade Association has confirmed that our group of 20 is all set for the event!

Attire & what to bring: you would just need to bring a water bottle -- and wear clothes you wouldn't mind getting dirty. That's all!

(I usually wear gumboots or some tattered sneakers, and some old jeans and a sweatshirt. As it's spring it might be on the chillier side in the morning, but we always get warm fast as the event progresses. I'll keep safe by our registration table any jackets/hats/gloves/sweatshirts that people want to take off.) Will send a reminder the day before the event, along with my phone number. See you soon!

A reminder to fill out this quick form as well by Thurs March 14th for your free t-shirt size! : ) (Register as an individual, selecting "The Hatch Shell" as the cleanup location by marking "1" underneath it and leave the other locations blank. Write "Boston Volunteers" in the comments section.)
