Sort food at The Greater Boston Food Bank (7/27)

Please note they changed the time of the event. It now starts at 9:30 instead of 9:00 and only goes until 12:00.

Please think of this as a real commitment, if you sign up then plan to be there. Yes, sometimes things up and can you can't make it but "It's really nice out." should not be one of the reasons ;-)

PROJECT DETAILS: All volunteers are trained in food safety at the beginning of the shift. Volunteers will inspect, sort and pack donated grocery products that are then distributed to hunger relief agencies. Volunteers work together as a team on an assembly line, and may be working alongside other groups. Some volunteers load boxes onto conveyer belts, other volunteers inspect products, others sort products, and others check and label boxes. A few of these "jobs" require the ability to lift a box of about 30 pounds, but the majority of positions simply require that a volunteer can stand and inspect products for a few hours. Your group project may involve frozen packaged meat sorting; we provide gloves for this project. If a volunteer strongly objects to working with meat, we can reassign a work area.

REQUIREMENTS: The age requirement for all volunteers is 16 and older, unless we have arranged a special shift for you. We have a CLOSED TOE SHOE POLICY (no sandals or flip flops) as we are a working warehouse, and please communicate this to your group as those wearing open-toed shoes will not be allowed to volunteer. Volunteers will want to wear clothes they do not mind getting dirty. Because of the machinery in our new sorting area, we require NO LOOSE CLOTHING OR ITEMS that could be caught in the conveyer belts. This would include untucked shirts, wide sleeves, jewelry including bracelets or long necklaces. LONG HAIR must be tied back or contained in a hat.

ON THE DAY YOU VOLUNTEER: Please park in our gated lot; when you approach the gate will lift. During the work week, we provide parking but encourage carpooling as the lot can fill up on weekdays and we cannot guarantee a space. Please do NOT park in "member agency" spots. If the lot is full, we have an alternative lot at the end of the building to which we can direct you as necessary. Weekends have plenty of parking options. Volunteers come to our front door area to sign in, and the receptionist will guide you. We have lockers for purses or bags, but The Food Bank is not responsible for lost or stolen items. If your entire group is running very late or if you are lost and need directions, please call[masked] to let the volunteer associate know.

MEALS: If your group would like to order a meal during your visit, two local options who deliver to us are Sal's Pizzeria at [masked] and Broadway's Best (617) 268-1228. We also recommend Haley House Catering.

FOOD DRIVES: We encourage donations of non-perishable food; donations can be brought in with you on the day of your visit. We can even set up a virtual food drive so that your team can purchase food online and compete against other groups! Your group will be working in our new facility at 70 South Bay Avenue in Roxbury/Boston near the South Bay Shopping Center right off Route 93. Directions are here: Some GPS systems do not know this address and you can try 99 Atkinson Street and we are just around the corner from there in a large silver warehouse.
