Talk 1: A machine intelligence perspective on risk and compliance in financial services.

Abstract: While the spend on risk and compliance technology continues to grow (Celent expects $72B in 2019) the fines and frequency of those fines by regulatory authorities is also growing. This reflects an expectation by regulators that financial institutions do a better job using the data at their disposal. The challenge is that legacy techniques are not well suited to the challenges of the modern data set – challenges defined by dimensionality, sparsity, unstructured and unlabeled data. These are challenges for machine intelligence and this talk will focus on emerging approaches (namely the combination of unsupervised learning, supervised prediction and extreme transparency) and how they are remaking the regulatory and compliance landscape.

Bio: Alex Baghdjian is the Financial Services Strategy Lead at Ayasdi, where he heads the effort to design, develop and deploy intelligent applications for the financial services industry. Alex has spent the majority of his career working with various artificial intelligence technologies and their application to key areas such as regulatory risk, financial crime and customer intelligence. Prior to joining Ayasdi, Alex was with IBM as a consultant, and, most recently in the Watson Financial Services division where he served as an Offering Manager. He has a Bachelors in Business Administration from George Washington University.
