Beginners Ride - Marshall Mesa to Flatirons Vista (Faster riders are welcome)

I'd like to make these regular Wednesday evening rides while the sunlight lasts.

This route is a technically easy ride but there are a few sections where you will work up some sweat :-)

We will meet/start at the Marshall Mesa Trail Head (TH) where, for non Boulder County locals, there is plenty of free parking in the dirt lot opposite the TH. Please arrive in time to leave the TH at 5:45pm.

This is about a 10 mile ride. Pretty smooth (most of the way) with a few hills. I would hope to complete the loop in about 1.5 hours and get us finished before sunset,

This is the loop:

TH -East on Marshall Valley - Community Ditch - Green Belt Plateau - Flatirons Vista - Flatirons Vista South - Doudy Draw - Community Ditch - Coal Seam - TH

Faster riders are welcome to join us. Feel free to bike faster, complete the Spring Brook loop and meet us at the Dowdy Draw signpost for the downhill.

All riders must be members and accept the liability waiver.

Beth - thanks for leading the ride. I hope everyone had a good time.

Hi Ian, I had a fantastic time! I actually think this route works well, even considering the small pavement sprint back to the parking lot. It saves a few minutes as opposed to coming back in the Community Ditch option, and IMO the CD trail west of 93 doesn't offer much in the way of interest (besides being dirt) and ended in a very unsafe crossing anyhow. Coming in on Eldorado Canyon Drive at least provides the safety of crossing at the light on 93/Marshall.

oh, and forgot to mention - I wanted to say I really enjoyed meeting everyone and I felt sort of bad for just counting noses and then kind of bailing out of the parking lot at the end, but I was trying to make it home before it got too dark :) If I'm not doing cyclocross clinics on Weds nights, I'll join you guys again soon.

Finally I couldn't finish on time. See you next time.

Guys - a minor problem. I have pulled a muscle in my neck which I think is not going to allow me to ride this evening. I will come on down to say "Hi" but will have to bow out of the actual ride. There are plenty of experienced riders in the list who I hope will pick up and lead the ride in my place. Thanks in advance.

Hi Ian, I will lead the ride tonight. Currently trying to decide whether I want to ride my Niner or my brand new CX bike, as I could certainly use the cyclocross practice :)

I will show up in the main parking lot at the Marshall Mesa trailhead, near the little map shelter (next to the gate). Look for a short chick with a long braid in teal/grey/white kit that says Studio One Dental on the shorts, with either a black-and-white Jet 9 RDO or a black Specialized disc cross bike. I'll be there by 5:30 so we can get organized and leave by 5:45.

Thanks - I hope you will still get a good ride in.

OK - After Beth's important point about the trail closure of the Community Ditch trail, we will take the Doudy Draw down to the road and complete the last 1.5 on the road. I will try and think of a better solution for next week. There are plenty of other trailheads we can use to make a circuit but those living out of Boulder County will have to pay the $3 parking. Thoughts on $3?

Hi Ian, and thanks for taking this group over. I live in SoBo and will try to come out to more of these - we are transitioning into cyclocross racing season so I may be pulled in more than one direction. I would love to join though so look for me/us out on our Niners.

You may already know this but I'll mention that with the Rt 93 construction of the new underpass, the Community Ditch section of trail is closed off at the (old, unsafe) lower crossing - you will not be able to access the MM trailhead via Community Ditch eastbound. The only way to get to Doudy Draw off of Marshall Mesa right now is via Flatirons Vista / Prairie Vista (aka the upper crossing at the light at 128/93)

Hi Beth, Thanks for the info. I had no idea it was closed. That puts a small damper in the route. I guess I will have to rethink. I was really hoping to use the MM lot as it has plenty of free parking. So the Community Ditch trail is basically closed off at the East end. Darn!

ah yes, the pavement option. Phil is correct, I've done exactly this when running short on daylight before and it's not optimal, but not horrible either.
