What we're about

This is a group for anyone interested in playing some outdoor volleyball! All skill levels are welcome. We will meet in North Boulder park in front of Balsam and 9th. We're going to start by playing for a couple hours one evening during the week but if there is enough interest a Sunday afternoon Volleyball/BBQ potluck event can be added.

The purpose of this group is to have a bunch of fun playing volleyball and meeting new people!

Sunday Volleyball in the Park

North Boulder Park

Update 11/29/22
By request and popular demand, we'll be moving the time up an hour again, so starting at 12 noon. We'll go till the sun drops, if we don't first!
People do come at the start and it's best when lots of people are there, so do try to come as close to the start as possible.

It's starting to get chilly but that doesn't stop us, right?!! Bring shoes, hats, gloves, layer up and away we go!

Any interest in going out afterwards for bite at "Above the Sun", or Comedy at Rayback, let me know...

We'll set up nets in North Boulder park. 9th street and Balsam.

It's a real friendly, diverse crowd and the more people that come the more we can do. Usually spirited games of 4's and 5's, with occasional doubles courts running challenge games. The rallies are super exciting in both cases!

I highly encourage both total beginners, and advance players to come, to support similar level players. Play can be tailored and accommodated accordingly.

Skill clinics & lessons, individual and group, available.

Re BBQ, occasionally that happens but seems most are focused on the vb. Some bring some snacks to share, no expectations.

Safety and fun: Bumping balls is fine, but do try to avoid bumping into each other too hard. ;) Good defensive positions and precautions are encouraged when hard hits are possible. Hands up to deflect balls from the head area.

Lopsided games: If games get awkwardly lopsided, you can employ 'skunk rules': Any game that either starts 7-0, or 11-1, the game can be called and then teams reshuffled.

Enjoy: Good advice an instructor once gave me: "Make mistakes and have fun!"

The park is big and wide, open so we have lots of room to grow. Tell a friend and make it yours. No experience or partners needed, individuals are welcome. (If you, or you know someone with a net we can be more robust and diverse!). This is self-organizing, so come, meet friends, talk, set up games, jump in and jump high!

I am encouraging a regular, automatic, event with collective environment, so no need to rsvp but come and make this group your own. We've been having a blast, and eagerly awaiting you to join. Feel free to contact me for questions, etc. [masked]. :J

This is for, of and by you, the vb community - no fee (donations for admin mgmt gratefully accepted). Your contribution is your presence.

Thanks, each and everyone for coming, you make it happen. :)

What To Bring:
You! Water, a volleyball if you have one, a snack and jokes to crack.

This Weeks Sand Double Volleyball (at Oasis)

North Boulder Recreation Center

Hey 'Sand-band!"

With time change and cooler weather we'll exclusively go indoor at Oasis in Broomfield. (SportsOasis.com, or call me 30/[masked])

Some core groups have been established Monday and Thursday Mornings 9-12noon. And with the dynamic improved drop-in, pickup formats, convenience and flexibility have been added while exciting competitive play has improved!

For now, the fee is $10/person/1.5hr session. Where else can you walk through the door to go from Arctic to the Tropics?!!! Thanks Oasis. :J

Please text, contact me to rsvp, any questions, comments. 30/[masked].

If you want to go at other times, I can set up an event and see if we can make that run. Let me know.

We have improved dynamic formats that can accommodate "bumper" crops of people (pun intended:), good pickup, dropin ball exists!

We do collective pickup volleyball with a variety of improved formats to ensure the competition is prime, and all players are active and engaged. Which include quick 2pt challenge games, workup courts, and mini 'KOB'.

So, for example with 8+ players, and 2 courts will have workup courts games to 7, where winners move up. Losers on the top start again from the beginning.

Otherwise, with between 5-7 players we can do advanced speed doubles games to 2, with a cap at 2. Randomness plays a big part in the nature of the short games so 'upsets' aren't unlikely, but the play goes fast and there are many, many exciting rounds. Other variations are possible, and the challengers on deck decide the length of the games.

Open to all. Bring your friends, spread the word. Please Rsvp, it improves and grows the event.

Spread the word because with those improvements the system can handle lots.

(No charge, Free. These are efforts to facilitate play systems conducive to open, competitive volleyball in general. Collectively collaborating to optimize play. Your support is greatly appreciated. :)

*NOW WED 1:30pm! - Sand VB Dbls, 'Oasis', Mon&Thur 10:30am

North Boulder Recreation Center

Update 12/3/22.
Looking for people to play this Wed afternoon 1:30pm up to 4:30pm at the Oasis in Broomfield. (ask for Revan MacQueen and the Meetup VB)

With a large enough collective base, Wed afternoons could become a regular thing too, like those that have been set Mondays and Thursdays from 10:30am- 1:30. Come!

With innovations in formats, drop-in pickup has been improved, so now "the more the merrier".

Competitive BB/A sand doubles* volleyball. Dynamic challenge pickup courts, where depending on the number of participants, formats optimize play with two principles: First, singularly focused competition, to serve the best players and competition . And secondly, actively engaging for all, where challengers have minimum wait time.

Open to all, and spread the word, the system can handle lots of players.

*To make it competitive, efficient and good workout for all, quick challenge games to 2 will be utilized for doubles, or possibly triples. Other formats, like workup courts, KOB, mini KOB (3 round robin games to 7pts), are possible. The quick games foster constant focus, and you get a lot of games in. They are the 'blackjack 21' of volleyball because they are many fast, exciting rounds.

Number of Players -------------- Format(s)
1-3 ---------------- Over-net pepper, or half court games
4 ------------------ Mini KOB (3 round robin games to 7)
5-8 -------------- Advanced Speed 2's - Games to 2, cap 2
>= 8 ------------- Workup (7pt games), or Adv Speed Triples

No limit will be set on the number of games a team can consecutively win. The success can and should be seen as a growing target by the challengers. Besides, randomness plays a big part in the nature of the short games so 'upsets' aren't unlikely.

Though, a goal for the 2pt quick games and to reset, is if a team can win 4 consecutive rounds on the winners side, a 'Grand Slam'. If so, they 'reign' with honor and respect and vacate the court.

(These are efforts to facilitate ideal drop-in pickup play systems which are more conducive to simultaneously: 1 automatic regular, 2 open to all, 3 active and engaging, and 4 sharp competitive volleyball. These aren't drills, rather they are the evolution of Kings/Queens court. Bring your top game, and step on the court focused ready to play. These are different from league play, tournaments, private events, but designed to complement them. Lots of quality play with many for the intense key moments of a game. Collectively collaborating to optimize play. Your support is greatly appreciated. :)

Oasis charges $10/1.5hr session. So 3hrs is $20. But don't let money dissuade you from coming. The fees are not hard and fast. Come, please! And because we are regular weekly they offer a 25% discount!
But we have to commit collectively, which should be no problem since vb is a team sport, right?! This is 'teamwork' on an organizing scale.

For more info contact me, James[masked]

PS (People need volleyball and Volleyball needs people. And, 'Rhythm' is a spoil that belongs to the victors!).
