WEBINAR: Writers Who Read: Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu

Details

March's book is Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu (USA; 2020) -
Sunday, 4pm (for 2 hours), online.

All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. Charles Yu's 2020 National Book Award winning novel takes this idea seven stages further, tackling the roles that Asian American men and women have been forced to play in our society. A meta-novel's meta-novel, told through second-person POV (yes!) this amazing book puts YOU at the center of the action. Watch out! Kung Fu Guy's heel is about to make you see stars.

We are Writers Who Read. We use Literary Forensics to dissect a recent novel (published within 18 months) with the goal of uncovering how the author has utilized their skills for effect. Storytelling is an art, but it's not a mystery. Every writer must address the following:

  • Structure, Timeline, Pacing, Suspense, Omission
  • Point of View, including Voice, Character, Place
  • Language, Tense, Imagery, Metaphor, Symbols
  • Motivation: Making a story pop - generating a thrill
  • Why this story? And why now? Industry considerations

We ask that all attendees read the entire book in advance of the meeting, and come bearing their discoveries of how the author has addressed each of the five points above.
