DevOps is a hot topic in today’s software development world. However most of the knowledge and experience with DevOps is based around application software and ignores the database. We will examine how the concepts and principles of DevOps can be applied to database development by looking at both automated comparison analysis as well as migration script management. Automated building, testing, and deployment of database changes will be shown.

Steve Jones has been working with SQL Server since 1991 and been a DBA in a variety of large and small companies and industries. In 2001 Steve founded SQLServerCentral with two partners and has been publishing technical articles and facilitating discussions among SQL Server professionals ever since. He currently is the full time editor of SQLServerCentral, owned by Red Gate Software. Steve is a Microsoft SQL Server MVP and a D&B MVP.

We will start with an overview of Azure Data Factory V2 concepts. Then, we go through some common design patterns for moving and orchestrating data, including incremental and metadata-driven pipelines. Along the way, we highlight common data engineering best practices for building scalable and high-performing ELT / ETL solutions.

Jason Horner is a Microsoft Certified Master of SQL Server and has worked with it for more than 20 years. He began work as a DBA/Application Developer in 1999. He made the transition to delivering BI solutions in 2002. Jason’s latest focus has been architecting large-scale Modern Data Warehouse / Big Data solutions in the Azure Cloud.
