May Book: Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

Co-Organizer Tina has given this book rave reviews, and Gone Girl was a huge hit with readers in 2012, so we're giving this book a go for book club in May.

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in “The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.” As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived–and famously testified that her fifteen-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who’ve long forgotten her.

The Kill Club is a macabre secret society obsessed with notorious crimes. When they locate Libby and pump her for details–proof they hope may free Ben–Libby hatches a plan to profit off her tragic history. For a fee, she’ll reconnect with the players from that night and report her findings to the club . . . and maybe she’ll admit her testimony wasn’t so solid after all.

As Libby’s search takes her from shabby Missouri strip clubs to abandoned Oklahoma tourist towns, the narrative flashes back to January 2, 1985. The events of that day are relayed through the eyes of Libby’s doomed family members–including Ben, a loner whose rage over his shiftless father and their failing farm have driven him into a disturbing friendship with the new girl in town. Piece by piece, the unimaginable truth emerges, and Libby finds herself right back where she started–on the run from a killer.

We meet upstairs at Kevin Barrys. Food and drinks are available. People often eat dinner while discussing the books, or get their weekend started off with a few drinks. The 6:45 start time is to give people a chance to settle in before we start the discussion at 7pm.

What? you mean my constant chatter? ...I do miss you guys and was really looking forward to discussing this particular book because I am not sure how well I liked it or not....I have now read all three of hers and I am not sure this was my favorite of the three, although I think I heard you say that this was the author's favorite...anyway, have fun!

Im going to try to make it to this one! Would anyone be opposed to me bring my 6 month old. He'd more than likely be okay with me just holding him. What do you normally do at the book club? Like I know discuss this book but do you eat? Or drink?

    1 · April 4, 2013

    • Elle

We drink & some eat too! We obviously discuss the book too. We have had a baby in attendance before so it shouldn't be an issue. See you soon!

  • Karen H.

Will be out of town. See you next month.
