Virgin Falls, TN

Let head down to Virgin Falls in the Virgin Falls Pocket Wilderness Area near Sparta TN. This is one of the most popular hikes in Middle Tennessee.

I have never made it to Virgin Falls so this will be an exploratory hike (i.e., we'll be using maps and guidebooks to work our way along the trail).

Trail Stats

Meeting time: 7 AM in Bowling Green  (travel time to the trail head is 3 hours each way)

Distance: 8.2 miles

Estimated Time: 6-8 hours

Difficulty: strenuous (From what I can gather there is a lot of climbing and the trail can be wet and slick from all the waterfalls)

Well behaved dogs are welcome

Bring your camera, lunch, and plenty of water.  We will stop in Cookeville, TN, for dinner on the way home.  The drive is 300 miles so make sure you bring gas money if you catch a ride with someone.

You can find more info on Virgin Falls at has an awesome write-up on the trail.

I was good meeting Phil & Ed. What a soggy, muddy, scenic, friendly experience :D

I have uploaded a photo of the last time I was at Virgin Falls. Click on my profile picture and then click where it says photo #2. Virgin is rather unique in that the water comes from out of a cave and then disappears into a pit/sinkhole. Have a great time everyone.

Hate to miss this one, but I'll be out-of-town. Hope you enjoy it enough to go back some time soon.

I have done this trail twice, it is rough in places and there are about 4 waterfalls and a cave.

Virgin Falls is one of the most awesome hikes in the southeast. There are lots of other spectacular waterfalls along the way to Virgin. *But* not sure this is the time to go. I have been in some Junes where the falls were dry as a bone, meaning no falls. March is the best time to see them at their peak. Hopefully because we have had some rain this season you won't be disappointed. Gary
