Mammoth Cave - Sal Hollow Trail

Let's check out Sal Hollow Trail, which shifted from being a hiking/mountain biking trail to a hiking/horse trail last fall.

We'll hike the first 3.5 miles of the trail before taking the fire roads (Turnhole Bend Trail and Buffalo Trail) back out to the parking area.  The trail goes by a spring coming out of a rock bluff, a sinkhole cave, and is one of the favorites of hikers in the park.

Hike Stats Meeting time:  9AM at Fairview, 9:45 at Maple Springs parking lot.

Hike Distance: about 6 miles

Estimated Hike Time: 3 hours

Difficulty: moderate

Well behaved dogs are welcome -Mammoth Cave has a strict leash law.

People traveling from Bowling Green can meet up in the Fairview Shopping Center Parking lot at 9AM to carpool/ caravan up to Mammoth Cave National Park. We'll park at the Maple Springs parking area (not the group campground but around the bend to the right where the horse trailer parking is) and hit the trail.  Be sure to wear appropriate cloths and boots with good ankle support. Bring plenty of water and a snack.

Good trip. Good terrain. Would like to do the whole 11-12 mile loop next time.

Easy hike and nice day. I was expecting it to be muddy but it was pretty dry overall.

I really had a wonderful time, meeting new people and seeing old friends too. The weather was beautiful.

Hke wa too long and at too fast a pace. No chance to enjoy sounds, fauna, and flora. This has been a problem on all hikes I've attended so I'm dropping out of the group.
