Cinema Tropical's "Janeiro in New York / Music + Film”. Since 2009, this popular series produced by Mary Jane Marcasiano has built a cult following among those who love Brazilian music and culture. Whether you already are a fan of Brazil or want to be, this series is for you.
The multi-talented Humberto Teixeira (composer, lawyer, politician, and creator of copyright laws protecting Brazilian artists) revolutionized the course of Brazilian popular music when in the forties he introduced the northeastern rhythms of Baião to the entire country. Also known as "The Doctor of Baião," he is celebrated for his popular classics, among them the "anthem of drought," Asa Branca.
This fascinating documentary searches for Teixeira and by revealing him, demonstrates the intimate relationship between music and national identity in Brazil.
