What we're about

This group is for anyone concerned about the hyperpolarization and the negativity in America/Western civilization right now. If you think that the hostility and the tribalism (conservative vs. liberal, religious vs. secular, urban vs. suburban/rural, majority vs. minority, conservative vs. liberal, “centrist” vs. activist, even those who feel so pessimistic that they don’t want to participate in the social compact vs. those of us who are still optimistic about our future) is tearing apart the fabric of our society, then this group is for you. If you want to help rebuild social trust across groups and communities, then this group is for you.

This group believes, based on experience, that talking to each other face to face (not online) over meals allows us to see that underneath the positions and factions that divide us are many universal values that we have in common with each other. We believe that there is more that unites us than divides us, but it takes actually listening to each other to get to that point.

You do not have to change your mind about anything to be part of this group or even be willing to change your mind. While we try to have a bit of balance at the table, we do not expect anyone to have a specific political/religious/social orientation. You just have to be willing to make a good faith effort to actively listen to your fellow citizens and try to understand them. You are welcome to come once or to keep coming and trying to understand more. We will try to find space for more groups to meet demand, but every group will be limited to 6-10 people to allow real interaction.

If you think the time is right for a shift in social consciousness back to civility, back to respect, back to optimism and being for a better future rather than anti- anything, then please join us.

Lets Break Bread Together! (listen to people you disagree with over food/drinks)

Breaking Bread is a no-host meal that involves actively listening to people who may not share your views or concerns, but who are also committed to listening to you and trying to understand your perspective. The two founders (1 conservative and 1 progressive) did this in Boston after the election for 1 year, and it was very successful. We are now spreading this to cities around the world. By nature, these groups must be small to allow active listening. Send your email to [masked] and we will make sure you get into the next one. Please come with at least one thing that you are concerned about, which you think people who don't share your political/social/religious views may not be concerned about.
