Bridge Classes for Beginners

The people I've played with have been really friendly and very helpful, but nothing takes the places of actually knowing how to bid and play the hand. More than a few of us need a formal refresher course. Would any members be interested in starting a short term class with a bridge instructor? If so, we could decide if the class could be held in our usual location or if we needed to move it to a private home. I would be the first sign up for the class, but I don't know any teachers.

Is this meetup still going on and active? Are there lots of members? How does a person learn the game, by jumping in, or a class?

I'm glad to see so many people like the idea of some additional instruction. I also notice that the location and the day of week and the time of day seem to be an issue for some of the respondants. Not certain how many people live NW vs how many people live SW but my two locations are pretty much due West so if it would be any help we could meet there. I live in California half the time where I run a non profit foundation, but I'll be back in Austin for four weeks starting mid September.

Nick: I have to go to the Home Depot over there anyway, so I'll combine that with a trip to Chipotle to see your group (or is that the same as this Meetup group?). Thanks.

    September 7, 2010

  • Howard

That's an interesting idea. Those of us who have had lessons or playing experience in the past could take specific topics and 'refresh' everyone else without having to teach a whole class.

    September 7, 2010

  • Lisa

What would people think of starting off the regular meeting with a 10 minute refresher lesson on a very specific topic, for example xxx opening bid....I'm not a teacher but I would be glad to prepare a short review of a specific topic.

I've taught classroom bridge in the past. My schedule is rather tight these days. However, with enough planning I'm sure I can squeeze in something. Come by on a Tuesday or message me. We'll start a list and see what works for those interested.

This is a very friendly, very helpful 'game-playing group'. Exactly what you describe as the recipe for "after refresher class'. My problem is that I need the refresher class in order not to continually burden the other players. I'm not sure we even have a "Director" but certainly not a soul in this group would ever make that 'call'. I know the kind of situation you're thinking of and it's not that unforgiving kind of group. They even look away when I start to count points on my fingers!

    September 7, 2010

  • Howard

Nick, thanks. Is that a game-playing group? From the other inputs, it sounds like we are looking for a classroom experience. For me, the step after a refresher class would be the kind of "beginner-friendly" game you suggested, where we play, but can ask questions along the way without someone yelling "director" LOL.

    September 7, 2010

  • Nick

The Tuesday group that meets 7pm at the Chipotle in Arbor Walk is beginner friendly. Depending on the numbers I can even sit with someone and bring them up to speed fairly quickly. Bring a light jacket if you come.

Here is a link for anyone interested. You are right it is a complete class, not just a refresher:

I found the classes, and they look fine if you're brand new to the game. But they take about 13 weeks which sounds like more than a refresher.

Dolly - me too; a little wine keeps everything friendly. Hmmm, a bridge happy hour?

I'd be interested in that idea, particularly if the location wasn't too far north and especially if we could have wine or cocktails!!

I can not find these Eanes classes, can you post a link?

    September 7, 2010

  • Howard

I think this is a great idea, and I would definitely participate. I'll check out the Eanes classes too. I also have problems with Friday evenings; maybe we could vote among whoever is interested in any non-Eanes class. I do know a teacher, and could ask her if we have a good idea how many woulld be interested.
